I've got a 20" Model 1 Sales "Match" rifle and have been struggling to find accuracy below 1" to 1-1/2"  at 200 yds.  I'm just trying to figure out if an AR is capable of producing that kind of accuracy at that distance off a bench. If any of you are getting accuracy of 1" to 1-1/2", what kind of equipment are you using? Do you think its time to upgrade to a higher quality upper?

As always, your input is very much appreciated

Personal semi-auto record is 5 shots INSIDE 1.25 inches @ 200 yards using Win 45 jhps and a 15X Weaver.  The Med. Wt. barrel marked "C MP 5.56 NATO 1/12" is NOT EVEN FREE FLOATED!

NEW GUY
I've got a 2-stage jewell, free floated barrel and a nikon monarch 5.5-16.5 scope a competition-type benchrest as well as a forend adapter that only allows rearward movement. I've adjusted just about every bullet, powder, primer and brass available. Thats what lead me to believe that perhaps my barrel/upper is not up to the job. Should I invest in a better upper than my Model 1? I can't really afford a $1000+ custom upper. Kind of thinking of a Fulton Armory predator/varmit upper? any experience or other recomendations?

Thanks again for all the help!

My best personal shooting at 200 yards was during a reduced course CMP match.  During the rapid prone stage, 7 rounds made a 1" group at 12 o'clock in 10 ring.  The other three made a 1" group above that in the nine ring.

I've never been able to duplicate that for a 10 shot string.

RIFLE:
Colt Sporter with CMP modifications done by Olympic's Custom Shop
RRA float tube.
Bob Jones Rear Sight
Armalite Front Post
Trigger Job on Stock Parts

LOAD:
Sierra 69gr SMK
25gr W748
New LC Brass (from CMP)

It sounds like everything is there. $500 for a rebarrel and you should be there.

My personal best is 7/8 inch 5 shot group out of a stock 20 inch colt.  It took me several days of playing with reloads to find the one it liked, but it was worth it!

Your 'match' rifle should do about 1MOA at 200yds from a sitting position with irons & proper sling use, if you're that good...

Ammo makes a big difference, HEAVIER IS BETTER....

My personal best is a 91, 200 sitting, with an Oly Arms 20" HBAR (no mods)... 1st 5 were 2Xs and 3 10s (which makes for around a 5-6" group), lost the 9 points on the last 5...

Personal best 200-yard? 100-5X from sitting at a Highpower match. It was the X-ring and south. Figure roughly 5-6" from position.

Rifle: Box-Stock Armalite National Match model AR-15

Load: LC cases, mixed; CCI-400 primer; 77gr Nosler J4; 24.5gr H-Varget; seated to 2.25" and go.

Quite frankly, with 1-1.5" groups at 200, I'd be quite happy and more worried about practicing, but that is just me. (And  the attitude that has taken me to Master-class Highpower shooter in my first year. Next year the goal is to produce scores in the 96-97% range and start chasing distinguished points.)

are you talking off hand or bench ??

my offhand shooting group is about 14" @ 200 Y..., bench, about 4"-6", which i consider good enough to kill my enemies !!

As noted by others.........., your getting sub-MOA groups (as MOA at 200 Yards is 2") and if ya get 1" groups your getting 1/2 MOA.

I'm wondering like others why your claiming this ain't no good, seems pretty decent to me.

FWIW my 24" CR6724 w/ Leupy 4.5x14x40 Tactical mil-dot scope bench'd, fed custom 77grn. SMKs shoots 3/4" to 1" 5 and 10 shot groups on average at 200 yards IF I do my part.

No offense - but buying from one of the lower end vendors and expecting super performance is a bit much.

Spend a few bucks and get a Oly SUM barrel - probably the best bang for the buck if you don't want to get a high end barrel.

I don't know about how well it would shoot from a bench with a scope, because I never shoot that way.

But I can shoot the shit out of a 200 yard NRA highpower target's 1.5 MOA X ring all day long, from a sling supported sitting position, wearing a shooting coat and glove, using my NM RRA.  Now that's slow fire, mind you.

No scope, just NM iron sights.
