I have no idea what he's talking about. Making the action cycle slower makes it more reliable, which is why many people use heavier buffers and even bolt carriers that don't have as much metal cut away.

Is he at Dix? Didn't know they were doing BCT at Dix again.

Yeah I though they shut down BCT a while ago and only use the facility for  NGB/Reserve training for deployment & Annual Training as well as their Command & General Staff College.

If you're in Basic you're not getting ready for IRAQ - at best he's getting ready for AIT.

Are you sure he's going through pre-deployment training (that is where they send a reserve unit to make sure they are up to speed before deploying them - those soldiers already went through BCT and AIT).

"air return on top of the bolt" -> carrier key?

Could he be referring to staking the carrier key screws?

This sounds like Kerry back in Nam talking about his rifle to other less meaningful and worthless people that dont know as much about guns as him.

Ya got to make sure that you use one of those left handed monkey wrenches when you  adjust the air return.

I hear if you use a K&N filter instead of a Fram on that air return it will boost your accuracy by 1MOA.

A number of Army National Guard units are cycling through their pre-deployment training at Fort Dix.  My firm has been providing training support there all summer.

If your friend is going to modify his issued weapon, when obviously he does not know what the hell he is talking about, go on and buy a nice card for his family now.  Say your goodbyes, shake his hand and tell him it was nice knowing him.
