Can you put handguards intended for an M4 on a standard carbine?

do you mean have an m4 on bottom and a carbine on top?  I don't know good question if thats yoru question!

To clarify:
I have a standard CAR and want to buy handguards designed for an M4, (Cav arms C-4). Just wanted to make sure they would fit.

Yes, they fit.  My LEO Bushy A3 M4 came with standard CAR handguards.  The DPMS mil-spec M4 guards went right on, no problems.

Yes you can use M4 handguards on a CAR (heck initially the only difference between the CAR and the M4 was the barrel length...

Yes you can have 1 M4 and 1 CAR handguard, or 1 CAR and 1 M33 handguard, or 1 M33 and... well you get the idea.
