Hi guys, a newbie question for you. What is required to place a flash hider on a .223? Do you simply just slide it on? Sorry, but I don't have much experience with this sort of thing. Tommorrow I get my first AR at a gun show, can't wait. :)

so it goes over the crown of the muzzle?

edit: so if I came home with an AR tommorrow without a flash hider, all I have to do is order one and screw it on? sounds pretty easy to me.

The barrel has to be threaded on the end so the flash suppressor can be screwed on.

Yes, if the barrel is threaded.  Half of the FH goes over the muzzle, half (or more) sticks out over the crown.

Do most new AR's come with a threaded barrel? I'm thinking i'll be going for a bushmaster or RRA.

and if they don't, does it cost much to get a barrel threaded? sorry for the silly questions, but just want to make sure I know what i'll be getting.

If it helps any I just had my barrel threaded on my ar for 50 bucks including the installation of an a2 bird cage and Its lovely.  Took my gunsmith only 1/2 hour to do.

I've got a machinist I work with lined up to thread the end of my barrel 1/2"-28 but I haven't found any info on how long the threaed section must be.  Also is there a slight "undercut" at the shoulder formed where the threaded section ends?

Undercut =  area where barrel diameter is reduced to thread root depth for easier threading.

Any help would be useful.

Thanks,

Kent
