Well I took the plunge and just ordered a pre-ban upper from BM. I'm gettin a 14.5" m4 A3 with 1:7 barrel and 5-port phantom. I also got m4 handguards for no particular reason. They said it would take 2-3 weeks for special order for the barrel, so by the time it is ready the AWB will be gone and I can get a lower with collapsable stock somewhere. I don't currently own an AR, post ban or otherwise, so I should be okay legally if it happens to arrive early. It was $700 after shipping for just the upper though, which I thought was pretty expensive since thats almost what a whole rifle costs! I guess if a complete lower goes for around $250 then it will be about right though. So, did I go good?

Congrats... I'm still waiting to place that order!  I'm looking for the BM 11.5/5.5 CAR in A3 with M4 handguards.  Also looking at ARMS SIRS system with aimpoint M2 :-)  Still can't decide on the collapisble stocks...

is yours a 1:7 twist barrel though?

oh yeah and what are m4 handguards anyway I can't tell the difference...

Nope, mine is a 1-9 twist, I likey that way........

M-4 handguards, well from what I understand are fatter around, for more heat resistance in heavy fire, at least that is my understanding, and I have been known to be wrong on occasion, just ask my last GF.......

Where can I get a 1:7 twist? I have been looking around and cant seem to find one in a 14.5" configuration.

I called BM and ordered directly, just had to ask. I think I saw a few 1:7 14.5" barrels on the EE but I don't have the tools to install a barrel myself.

Bushmaster has them, but you have to call and ask.
LMT makes one as well and there are several vendors in the EE that can help you out.

Last week I ordered a MOD4 (M4A3) upper from CMMG with a 14.5" and perm phantom, chrome, 1 in 7 barrel and folding front sight.  Cost about $645 shipped.  I should get it next week.  Let's hope no one pulls a fast one and leaves us holding the bag.

dont worry about the legality of it arriving early or anything just dont put it on till Sept14.  BTW does bushmaster accept returns in case the AWB doesnt expire

It isn't likely to be renewed.

Even if it were, it would be a simple matter of changing the FH to a compliant muzzle device, and removing the bayo lug.

if the ban got renewed I think I would buy a pre-ban lower before their prices skyrocketed permanantly.

At the Harrisburg PA gunshows last weekend, I saw one dealer had  complete Bushmaster lowers w/ A2 stock for $260, and w/out stock for $240.  Anyway,  I saw several people were buying them like crazy as the crowd got larger.  I didn't really know what I was thinking- I decided to join in on the purchase which  almost had to fight for it.  Now, I am glad I did.  Hopefully, I can mount the Pre-ban upper along w/ the retrackable stock on it , soon enough.

Forgive me, I'm kinda new to this stuff.

After the ban goes away I want to build a M4 copy. Now I see your going to use a 14.5 barrel? Is this going to be legal after the ban? Or do I need a 16 barrel? Also what other parts will I need to make a correct copy of the M4?
Thanks,
Kevin

It's a pretty sure bet at this point.

Now come February, when congress is back in session, well, you might want to have all your "evil" weapons assembled and documented by then....

NFA '34 makes 14.5" barrel restricted; the AWB doesn't change that.  What some do is buy a 14.5" barrel and then perm attach a muzzle brake/flash hider that is at least 1.5" long to bring the OAL to 16".

1shott, is that at KKF "A3 mil-spec" flashhider? I like those  and they can bring the 14.5 to legal length and still kind of look stock...

Congrats Nuke and other guys on your new BM stuff.

The above listed product - LMT barrel- is what I have - In fact, I bought the entire LMT M4 upper  and will tell you that the quality, finish, and fit are unbelievable. I could not be happier.
