My A2 elevation drum is marked  8/3 , A4 is marked 6/3 ..  Why

Less space for up/down movement on the detachable one.

The detachable top elevatiom clicks are half minute; the fixed upper clicks are one miinute.  So, one complete turn of the elevation wheel gives you less actual elevation.  In return you get the ability  for more precise adjustment.

Since I don't plan on trying to shoot anything beyond 600 meters, I'd rather have the half minute clicks

I'm glad this was brought up because I have a question. On all of my A2 uppers or A3 with carry handle, I do the adjustment (I got off the Maryland Shooters site) where you bottom the rear elevation at 200m vs the standard 300m (8/3 -2 clicks). I assume this is recommend for all AR15s since the average shooting is done 200m or less?

zeroing in - adjustments

Well, yes, except that it's four clicks for the detachable tops, because the clicks are only half minute.
