I am sending my Colt HBAR upper to Adco next week for barrel threading and cutting in anticipation of the AWB sunset. I figured since I was sending it up, I might get some more barrel work done to it.

Should I leave my HBAR barrel as is or have the M4 notch cut into it? Fluting also crossed my mind.

I had an H-bar and sold it, with a callapsible stock on or short LE tactical stock the weight is just too far forward for my liking.

I purchased an M4 type cut bbl. and was very satisfied with the more balanced feel of the rifle.

Have it turned to M4 profile, but without the M4 notch.

Neither, just have it turned into a lightweight. If you think the M4 cut looks cool, go for it then.

would that be considered gov't profile then? Just wondering.

Yes, but the government has only purchased that contour on 20 inch barrels. The notch is the M4 barrels weakness.

Can you elaborate as to what you mean by "weakness" you have my attention. Another curious question.

Some say that it overheats. I have even heard claims that it will droop if you fire enough rounds on auto. I dont know what the truth is, but I cant believe that the cut is good for either accuracy or barrel life. It does look cool though. I imagine it makes the front and rear parts of the barrel flex seperately while firing.

M203 cut is a waste of money, unless you have an M203 to mount on it.

fluting is costly.  just buy a new upper or be happy with what you got!

I was under the impression that an M4 bbl is an HBAR with the bbl trimmed for the M203.  Am I wrong and if not, how much of a weight savings is this?

I believe M4 profile is thin underneath the handguards.

I'm all about the M4 notch, "M4 look". Hbars are sweet but M4 style is sweeter. BTW, I'm about to send Adco at least two barrels to have work done.

I was thinking of doing the exact same thing as you and was questioning the same ideas but I think i will just stick with my Hbar (Colt 6731).  Have you ever compared a Colt Hbar to a Bushie, the Colt "heavy" section only goes out about three inches from the receiver, where as the Bushies go out almost to the FSB.  No real point here other than my (don't know what model you have) carbine is not as heavy as other 16" Hbars, so I am going to leave as is.

If you're having it turned, I'd skip the notch.  If you're buying new, the notch is usually there and you just deal with it.

Or, as someone else said, you could turn the whole thing down to a lightweight.

The notch by iteself is pointless (and makes you look really silly).

Getting a full M4 profile job (where the barrel is turned down under the handguards) so it's lightened makes a lot of sense.

I voted "M4 notch" as I assumed you meant a true "M4" profile. If you were referring to the "notch" only than I would change my vote to leave it alone.

I'd go for the A1 or superlight profile. As a semi, it probably won't get real hot and you'll like the lightness of the resulting carbine. I use to like my HBAR until I felt a superlight. Its a carbine, not a precision rifle.

Skip the M4 cuts, without the M203 it just weakens the barrel and looks wannabe.

I have to agree.  For most people there's no point to the notch but looks.

However, fluting serves a purpose.  It reduces the HBAR's weight and enhances cooling.

This is what I was thinking of doing. After looking at the prices I would be better off buying a new barrel for $160.00. For now I am just going to get the barrel threaded and start on another complete upper.

Anyone know what the difference in weight between the HBAR and the m4 govt profile is.  I have the HBAR and with railed forend and accessories it is starting to feel more like a 24 inch varmint rifle than a carbine.

But to answer you r question: given equal barrel length the Hbar is .5 pound heavier.

And if its the newer SOCCOM M4 barrel the HBAR in 14.5 is only 4 to 5 ounces heavier.

I want to have a constant diamater barrel.  I have been thinking about having mine milled down so that it is the same diamater under the handguards that it is in front of the gas block.

Cool, but you want to have it thicker in the chamber area.

Recommendation: use punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.

To answer your question, Congress is not in session right now. I believe they will be back in session on Sept. 7. That leaves almost no time for the AWB to be renewed. However, Bush has said he would sign it if it came to his desk. The Republican-controlled Congress will undoubtedly not even let an AWB bill come up for a vote.

The other part depends on manufacturers. You will be able to buy an M4-type rifle. Beta C mags, almost certainly (although I believe the price will be about $250 or a little more). Lookout for high initial demand on new products though.

is there any way to get a picture of this notch yoru talkin about.

Thanks for the info chewbacca!

It confirms for me that after the ban, my future Bushmaster 14.5in heavy fluted barrel with phantom will weigh only .2lbs more than my current 14.5in M4 barrel with muzzle brake/comp.

I have been waiting for somebody to say that!!   No but I keep the word doc its in open the whole time I am on this site becuase there always seems to be questions on barrel weight.  I got the info from somebody on ARFCOM and saved it because I figured it would come in handy.

And apperently it HAS!!!
