[ARCHIVED THREAD] - How much is this worth?

Fellas, I am looking to sell my 1976-77 AR15 with SN: SP644xx. The gun is in excellent condition and I will be including a whole host of accessories. How much is this gun worth??

I believe we would need a lot more info, and possibly pics to determine that.

Who is the manufacturer? Colt, I assume? Also, I further assume it is an SP1, or similar?

This is just to get the ball rolling. There are others who are far more knowledgeable than me.

Yes, it must be a Colt SP1. The condition will make a big difference. Also the staus of the ban will make a difference. It is probably worth a little more now than it might be worth in a month. If you post some pics, we might be able to give you an idea of its value.

I bought one a few months back for $450, and it is in fantastic condition. They are often available in many areas for $800-1000. If it looks new, it may go for a little more.

Just wanted to update....I had my AR appraised and the rifle itself is worth $1,950 +-$100 depending on where I am trying to sell it. Thanks anyway.

No offense but big difference in "being appraised" vs having someone offer you that kind of money for it. Especially right before the ban sunsets.

No offense taken. You are absolutely right. This is why I am always flexible when it comes to price. An item is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay.

Once the ban sunsets, all "post ban" rifles manufactured between 1994 and 2004 will still fall under the AWB law. It will take additional legislation to change that. Now once manufacturers start building our favorite rifles again, you are right....our pre-ban guns wont hold worth based solely on the fact that they are preban.

I don't think this statement is true. There will no longer be any law to enforce. The law will simply go away. You cannot break a law the doesn't exist on the books anymore. The legislation that it took to change that was the sunset clause built into the initial ban.

Kind of makes you laugh at all the people hoarding pre-ban rifles and cheating people out of $2000+. In one month all they will have is an old rifle

Sunset means an end, no law, finished, final, nothing to change or enforce.

There is always that 10% that don't get it.

I think at this point in time, the MAXIMUM value of the rifle is probably right around $1000. I bought a pristine SP1 (close year to yours) for about $1100 a little over a year ago. I have since seen many auctions going for more like $1000. Now with the ban seeming to sunset, the value is going to be a little less.

I have to wonder, what is the point of selling it now. I would rather keep an oldstyle Colt than sell it for less than it is worth to me.

It is very impractical to expect to get $1850 for it nowdays, maybe back 5 or 6 years ago when the appraiser's book was published.

I sold two of them for $1000 each last summer. There is nothing intrinisically better about them as a pre-ban, it is in fact actually annoying since it is so non-standard on some parts. You just have to find someone who thinks it has some kind of collector value.

Sept 14th there will be no difference between pre and post ban.

Your rifle is curretly a pre ban. However, I doubt anyone will pay pre ban dollars for it at this point. I suspect that $600 would be a good selling price for a 24 year old Colt AR.

I work in the peoples republic of MD and live in VA, It just feels like I live in MD (and i was planning on moving). I want to hold on to her but I need the money. I am hoping to let her go for 1700 obo.
