i was reading "The Ideal Rifle" in the Articles section of information, and it says that "... bayonet will not fit correctly on a 16" barrel..."

i found a listing of a ar-15 with a 16" barrel and a bayo lug.... wtf?

Because the bayonet, being a military item meant for military rifles, is designed to fit on the bayonet lug and hang off the flash suppressor. The distance between the two is the same on 20" and 14.5" barrels, but NOT on 16" civilian barrels.

No it wont.

If you get an upper with a 14.5" barrel with a perminently installed longer flash hider it will.

Your gunbroker listing is just letting you know that the Gun is not an Emasculated AR. Although the bayo stud is basically useless on a 16" barrel, a true manly man will not buy a gun without it!

You can mount a bayo on it but there will be slop between the barrel and the bayo hilt (where the ring is supposed to be around the break/flash suppressor)

Additionally, the blade of the bayo won't go as far beyond the muzzle as it was designed to. Thus if you stick something with it, the penetration is only partial.

For what its worth, it is my understanding that a bayonet will fit on a mid-length gas, 18" barrel. Is that correct?

Standard bayonet fits:

CAR-length gas system, 14.5" barrel

Mid-length gas system, 16" barrel

Rifle-length gas system, 20" barrel

The shop where I work has a 16 inch Colt M-4 upper that has a bayonet modified with an extention on the handle, so it will work on the normal 16 inch carbine barrels. Nice workmanship, but no clue where the adaptor came from. Extension goes between the handle and the endcap, if that's what you call it.

I picked up an "extended" colt bayonet not too long ago off of the EE boards, it's just a small piece that screws into the bottom of the bayonet.. It's not perfect, but it works for those of us who have the 16" and don't feel up to changing it.

I bought one, excellent Solingen steel Colt branded bayonet with extended handle fits 16" barrel with FS perfectly. Expensive, but worth it IMHO.

IMO, this is the way to go. I have one and I don't even have an AR bayonet yet. There a plenty of other reasons to pick a mid-length.

EDITED TO ADD:
If you REALLY want that badass bayonet look, mount a 16 1/2" one on a M1, M1903 or M1917. I put one on my M1917, looked in the mirror and nearly pissed in my pants. I can only imagine what seeing 10,000 doughboys charging across No Man's Land looked like.

I agree 100%. In my collection I have two 16" and three 10" for my Garands & '03. What really breaks my heart is that in the days of my youth, before I knew anything about 16" bayonets, I sold one for $25 (beer $$$).

Does any of the manufacturers make a 16" configuration that will work correctly with a bayo? I've
seen the 'mid-length' handguard variety, but the barrel doesn't look like it would be long enough to
hold the bayo right.

RRA and Armalite make a mid length upper. In the "Pre-ban" configuration, they will accept a bayonet.

RRA and Armalite make a mid length upper. In the "Pre-ban" configuration, they will accept a bayonet.

Anybody know if Model1's mid-length or J&T (sp?) will accept them also?

Mid-length barrels are actually 11/16" too short for a proper bayo fit. Yes, the bayo will still fit, but the ring will be covering the slots in the FS, reducing its effectiveness and making the bayo someone less secure. But, given that most folks are just installing bayonets for show, I guess that doesn't really matter much.

The "clamp-on" bayonets are hideous and I have to question how sturdy they are.

At the very least, they will strip the outside of your barrel down to the steel which, in my book is a no-no. My rifles don't have to be purdy, but I dont like rust

I like the shorty look and have been wondering if the slipover suppressor is the same diameter. Guess it is if the bayonet will fit, right
