Both are flattops IIRC. But as to which is burst or automatic I forget. All I know is that military designations do not always match civilian designations.

Someone who knows alot more about this than I do will be around to tell you that in MILITARY terms an M16A3 is a carry handle receiver with different fire control than the M16A2. The M16A4 is a flat top receiver.
Some non-military sellers of AR-15 parts have started using A3 to describe flat top receivers, while others stick with the military nomenclature and call them A4s. It is a mix of military and civilian marketing terms is all. For most of us A3 = A4. |

if the rifle is issued to you:  A2 - FCG w/burst A3 - FCG w/auto  A4 - FCG w/ burst and a flat top upper if you had to buy your rifle  A3 = A4 |

never really thought about it, that is a Great question. i wonder if its issue/distribution was very limited, and only specific to certian ops  someone here should have been issued one at some time? |

I've known that serveral units have used them, probably including special forces units outside the boundaries of normal Army issue ( for weapons ) . I've heard a rumor that the Navy bought a good number of them, maybe for the SEAL teams... But as far as I've seen, they have always used modified M-4s with 203s, Aimpoints, ACOGs, RASs, VLTOR and Crane stocks, etc.
I can almost guarantee that no conventional Army unit issues it, and the USMC is issuing the M-16A4 from here on out, even in basic in smaller numbers. |

The M16A3 is a regular ole M16A2 with a M16A1 fire control group, and the receiver is marked AUTO rather then BURST.
The NSN is: 1005-01-357-5112 Goverment drawing number: 12012000 Only the Navy bought em, and only about 7,500 delivered, all manufactured by FNMI. |

The M16A4 was adopted as the standard US service rifle in 1997. It is the same rifle as the M16A2 other then the flat top upper and removable carry handle.
NSN number is: 1005-01-383-2872 Govt drawing number: 12973001 Far as I can tell fewer then 100,000 have been delivered, about half are Colt's and the other half FNMI. |
