having seen the work that HK did on the SA80A2 the quality of the parts they added is visable. I would sugest that work of that quality would be put into the M4 could only improve it.
The SA80A2 according to the tests and user reports is a much better weapon than the SA80A1

ah...it finally appears!!   another desperate act to reclaim the L.E. market.

The once mighty realm of the MP5 has fallen to the M16. The much ballyhooed UMP was a wash, the G36 series hasn't caused much of a stir - alas H&K's 'supreme engineering talent' has resorted to plagiarism (mildly warmed over).

I bet that was a large irregularly shaped bitter pill for someone in Obendorf to swallow.

It had to be said - Flame Away.

I love HKs as much as the next guy, but what have I fallen back on time and time again?  The 1911 and the M4.

What's HK beginning to make again?  Oh, yeah...1911s and M4s.

Kinda funny.

Like H&K would give you the option anyway... anyone know whether this will be offered to the proles or is it LE/Military only?

This is kind of a bummer.

Seems like HK either goes too far or not far enough.

I was hoping for something that looked a little more G36ish with the ability to take a folding/adjustable stock.

I wonde how much more this thing weighs than a regular AR?

Interesting weight comparison.

HKM4 with vltor stock: 7.09lbs

Colt M4 with regular stock and I assume carry handle: 5.9 lbs.
http://www.colt.com/mil/M4_2.asp

How much heavier is the vltor?

Edited to add:

Colt M16A4 (with carry handle I assume): 7.5 lbs

Hk 20" with A2 stock (with carry handle ??): 8.22 lbs

that should give a pretty good idea of the wieght difference.

No Civvy uppers, BUT... They will be marketed to LEO in the near future. What does that mean? I'm buying one and stripping it down for my civvy gun [;)]

The goal of the program to offer an M4-style carbine that will fire 20,000 rounds without cleaning, lubrication, stoppages, or parts replacement has been realized in the development of the HKM4 Enhanced Carbine.

The prices on transferable M16s are going to go up. DAM!!

It doesnt look like the parts the HK upper uses will fit on to current AR uppers. The bolt and carrier looks the same but on one of their pictures it does not show anything coming out of the barrel where the gas tube would be. O well I guess i gotta start saving for whenever they release these out to the public.

I would think somewhere inbetween the two would be perfect.

This one definately needs to lose some weight.

Edit: And of course with the ablity to accept any new improved chamberings.

I agree %100.  If the weight could be lessened it would the answer to the reliabilty questions that seem to follow the M-16A2s.  I'm wonder it hasn't gotten more publicity?

I gotta agree with QS.

To me the HK M4 doesn't even have much appeal other than as novelty, although the gas piston system is a nice touch.  Factor in that it will probably be overpriced, and there is a good chance they won't make it for civvies, and I could care less that they are making this...

BUT if they do offer to civvies and at a competitive price I will be pleasantly surprised.

Uppers available, perhaps....

While development and validation testing of the HKM4 is still ongoing, it is anticipated that HK will offer retrofit services for existing M4-style weapons to the HKM4 standard for U.S. and foreign military and law enforcement users. A “ drop in” HKM4 upper receiver module and a complete carbine are also nearing completion.

Unless they mark the uppers LEO there will be uppers out there if only as stripped parts.  The price though those would sell for if that
were the only source for them.....,

Its a real nice looking prototype and everything, but I just don't get the point. I'll stick with my Colt, Bushmaster, RRA, Olympic, DPMS, etc, etc, etc. I would love to get my hands on about 20-30 of the magazines!

I think alot of you are jumping the gun. For almost all of us this is the first time seeing this. They said they're undecided if they were going to release it to the civilian market. That doesn't mean NO. Would you consider $1500 too much for the upper? Look what a LMT upper cost. I think they're waiting on a military contract.
Link Posted: 2/12/2004 5:33:22 PM EDT
[#47]
I believe this is it for the direct gas system. It's either the HK M4 upper or the XM8. I think the Jessica Lynch firefight was the final nail in the coffin. The U. S. public hasn't heard of military weapons failure since Vietnam and the introduction of the M16. If the new HK upper performs like promised I'd say stop right there we have a winner. If not I'm all for a new platform with a new caliber.

Don't get the point?!

An AR that goes "20,000 rounds without cleaning" doesn't interest you?

If HK can "walk the walk", that reliability that I can only dream about with my AR.  Hell, even my AK for that matter.

I wonder how much the rifle or the upper will cost IF made available to the public? They said that the gas system can be retrofitted to existing rifles so maybe they might make a kit available to the public. But then again HK is very slow when it comes to the public wants and needs.

If the price is right, i'm selling my Bushy.

I got some more of the new ones, not the old dull finished ones, and I love them. These are nothing like the bad batch we received previously. Fit and finish are 100%, function is 110%, and they're so easy to clean.
