Besides being more confortable to the cheek, is the foam cover of the buffer tube necessary?  Any of you install one without it?

Yes, installed one, they are absolutely functionally unneccessary.  Really nice when it's cold or hot though.

I still have the foam and it has surprisingly held up well after a year of a bit of abuse.

Still love it.

i removed the foam and wrapped it in paracord
the foam didnt last too long and got really dirty
