FWIW the older "triangle-type" handguards install exactly the same way as the newer ones do. You can buy them off the EE.

The only thing to watch out for is the front handguard "cap" behind the front sight base. Very rarely, I've seen 20" uppers with the round cap, which the triangle handguards won't fit. Most likely yours is the triangle cap but check it first. Round handguards fit either type of cap, but the old ones only fit the triangle cap.

What I'd like to see, is one with a slabside lower, but have a forward assist ( no shell deflector ), as well as the other A1 goodies ( oprn prong FS, tho ).
Problem is, nobody makes a slabside lower these days... |

Mill off the magazine fence and you dont have an M16A1 look alike anymore.

A slabside lower with a forward assist upper would be a XM16E1 clone....I think....[:\] The mag fence & forward assist were the first (external)improvements if I recall. The trapdoor buttplate & birdcage flash suppressor came later. |
