I purchased an ACE skeleton stock for one of my AR's this weekend and I really am pleased with the purchase. However, there's one thing about the set-up that I don't like (for purely cosmetic reasons) and that's the foam pad that covers the buffer tube. Comfortable...yes, but I don't like how it "almost" interferes with the charging handle and I don't like how it looks kinda cheap and prone to damage, soaking up sand, water, etc.
So, I pulled mine off and replaced it with a piece of bicycle tubing. I cut up one of my 1.5x26 mountain bike tubes and it slides over with perfectly. A smaller one might fit a bit tighter and prevent twisting or movement, but I used a bit of spray adhesive (hair spray would do) and it's on there nice and tight. The rubber provides some insulation, but the cool thing, is now it looks like a real skeleton stock. The foam pad filled the empty space and made it look kinda cheesy, IHO. A super cheap change, that not only looks cool, but is cheap and easy to replace when needed.   And one of my "military" family...since I had the camera out.

There is another cool ACE stock on page 15 of the AR picture thread.
It looks that instead of a foam tube, the owner used braided rope (kinda like on a knife handle) |

I totally agree with your assessment of the foam padding. However, I would like to have a bare buffer tube that somewhat matches the matte anodizing of the stock… I can’t find one; all the ones I have found are somewhat “glossy”. Oh well, I hear bbq paint works magic.

A suitably colored prophylactic might add a bit of conversational interest to your ACE stock. I believe a 'ribbed' model would help insure a proper cheek weld. (Might be a little slippery though.) 5sub |

Yes, I'll try to post some pictures tonight. I like the rope, but I like there to be an "air" space between the top and bottom tube, similiar to para stocks on some other weapons systems.
The nice thing about the tire tube, is the rubber takes on a nice matte finish, especially if you wipe it down with some Goo Gone. I did this to clean off a bit of adhesive I got on the outside of the tube. From a distance of a foot or two, you cannot tell that it is a rubber tube. In fact, it actually matches my Rock River lower almost exactly. |

Another variant of the paracord wrap. I really like the look/feel.

Make a loop as shown and wrap tightly from butt end. Place end through "loop end" and pull cord tight from the butt. Cut ends "short" and melt using a lighter. Keeping the ends and return cord on bottom will leave neat ends that are durable and hardly noticeable.

Pretty cool. I just used some OD thread and put a few stiches in the parachord to hold it in place. Then melted the ends of the chord.

The rubber tubing is unique. So far though, I prefer the para chord. Where do I get "Parachord 101"?

I'm trying to get pics up of the bicycle tube on the ACE stock. I can figure out how to put (a) rubber on by rifle but I can't figure out how to post pics...and all that money spent on graduate school shot to Hell!

When I had an ARFX ( sold it on the EE), I cut the foam sleeve in half and only installed one end on the buffer tube, flat side against the buttpad and the tapered end forward. A different look and clearance for the charge handle.
