OK, I know this one has been done to death, but I'll ask anyway.  I am looking at rebarreling my preban, and am trying to decide if I want to go with a 14.5" or 16" barrel.

Currently I am looking at a chrome lined Hbar w/a phantom FH.  This rifle is mainly for shooting paper along with plinking, the longest range I have available for target shooting is 100m, and *in theory* the rifle might be used for home defense someday.  Also, I live in IL, so no evil things like supressors allowed, and I don't have any interest in installing a FF handguard.  And if you haven't already figured out, I am not LEO and no SBR in IL so the FH would have to be welded to the 14.5" barrel.

Sooooo, if you were me (and I don't wish that on anybody!) which length would you go with?  Any comments would be appreciated!

16" gets my vote!  Better performance.  Same size when your done anyway(16 min law).

Get the most out of your ammo.

Just my thought

A 14.5 with Phantom will just make the 16" min so it gets my vote.

The 16" with Phantom will be almost 18" long when you are done.

I'll take the slightly shorter (and lighter) barrel over the modest increase in MV.

14.5"

No particular justification other than it looks better to me [:p]

Actually, my postban already has a 16" barrel, so with a 14.5" I would, in fact, have one of each! [:D]

I just had KKF redo my postban 16" busmaster M4 mini-y comp'd barrel.

He turned it down to lightweight, removed the mini-y, and put on a fake flash suppressor (A3ffs) that telescopes back over the rifled barrel.  It looks like a 14.5" w/perm ffs, but has the ballistics of a 16", and the crown is protected.  Best of both worlds (except the actual flash suppression)

It is on a parts gun, A2 upper (unknown mfg), Oly FIRSH, Mega lower w/RRA 2stage trigger, VLOR A1 stock, Colt B/BC, Falcon inf vert grip, Surefire light, CQB SOP sling, Knights rail mount for sling.  I really like it.

The 14.5 looks cooler but you lose the ability to remove the muzzle device.

Probably not an issue unless you need to replace/upgrade the sight tower.

16" with A2 FS (don't even talk about 2" FS) looks really unbalanced to me.

Me thinks the best combo would be 15"  (cut down from 16") with A2 FS perm from KKF. But then this is a compromise since you get a little bit more velocity and less effective flash suppression.

One more vote for the 14.5", for the reason these gentleman have pointed out, as well as the quicker handling.

14.5" barrel..better handling, overall shorter rifle, lighter and for 100m and under the 16" just doesn't appeal to me. Hmmm, I can't remember the last time I had the urge to replace my phantom FS and I don't want to give uncle Sam $200 to get a silencer for my rifle.

16" for me. I could not live without the ability to have the silencer.

I didn't know better when I purchased mine...I would like to take off my front sight rise to install floating handgaurds, but I cannot. I bought the 14.5" cause my wife said it looked cool.

However, I voted 14.5" above because I hate to admit when I am wrong. :)

Just my 2 cents; After using the 14.5in, The 16in feels clumsy to me!

14.5 for me same accuracy as a 20" out to 350 yds you get a little more velocity out of a 16 but at the real combat ranges Ill take the shortest I can legally get and at that range there is no differenc between the 2.Most combat engagements are 100 yds and under any way so to me the 14.5 with phantom is the way to go,its the exact set up I have on my preban bushie but its a heavy barrel.

to me the issue between 14.5 and 16 wouldn't be size nor handeling.

To me the big problem with 14.5 is the huge hassle it would be to replace that FH. You'd have a tough time if you ever decide to upgrade to a surpressor, and i've heard airborne surpressor stories about those quck detatch FH/Supressor combos.

IMHO, 1.5 inches isn't worth the hassle. Go with the 16" and get a real threaded muzzle. Chances are that'll be more useful than that little increase in barrel size and bulk.

IMO

Can't have an SBR here so I'll take the 16". I don't want a permanently attached flash on my rifles, seen too many of them get damaged or broken. That said, I don't even like 16" barrels due to the loss of MV, I'll keep my 20". There is a 16" in the trunk tho, if residual velocity becomes a concern with it I'll just get back in the car and drive closer to the target. [:)]

I had Kurt cut a 16M4 to 15 and perm an a2 for a 16 OAL.  Love it.  The handling improvement of a couple less inches is all in my head but who cares.

Semi off topic:  Pay the $200 tax and register an SBR.  Get your threaded 14.5 or discover the joys of the 10.5.  Its deadly and accurate out to 100yds.

I'll put another vote in for the 16" barrel!

Tweak and Lockedon pretty much summed up my feelings about this issue.[:D]

The "Troy" barrel is what this is all about- replacing an unlined with a chrome lined one!

Dammit, you all suck!  The poll was supposed to be way lopsided one way or the other to help me make a choice via peer pressure, not 100 votes and 50 for each!  [banghead]

Seriously though, it amazes me that opinion is split dead down the middle on this...

I agree with the crowd who doesn't want anything permanently mounted on the muzzle.  Also, I prefer 16" because I don't have to pull any tricks to make it post-ban.

Okay, I was thinking too lopsided.  In reality, the 14.5" is TOOO short, and the 16" is just too damn long and heavy to carry.  I wouldn't suggest getting either of them.

Easy Dawg, get the practical 16", then start saving for that cool looking 14.5" upper.
