Just curious as to why some say you can't have too many AR's. Why do you guys have multiples (maybe I'll be convenced to buy another)?

Why do people eat more than one flavor of ice cream? They all have roughly the same texture and the coldness numbs your tastebuds anyway.

Why not own more than one?

Because the AR I use for service rifle competition weighs about 13 pounds and I can't bump fire it.

Because they are addictive.  You can't just have one.  You say to yourself, I'll just get a couple stripped lowers to put away, and then end up building them up right away.  It's not our fault.  You can't just have one.

Different tools for different jobs basically. At the moment I only have three-two preban 20" Colt HBARs and a new 16" Colt M4 carbine.

I use the HBARs for long range plinking and keeping skunks out of my wife's tomato garden. I use the shorter carbine for short range plinking (less than 150 meters), and eventually it will become the "go to" gun for my wife when things go bump in the night.

Do I need three of them? Not really, but it's a fun and rewarding hobby so why not? My two identical HBARs were purchased in 1991, and back then I had the mentality that the best "spare parts kit" was a spare identical weapon. For that reason I have identical Colts, identical Sig handguns, identical Benelli shotguns etc.

These days I'm a little more practical (translation: cheap [:)]) so instead of buying an identical weapon I buy a complete suite of spare parts to keep them running. Since you never know when something might break it's nice to have enough parts onhand to fix anything.

First of all, welcome to the site!  Drop by the GA Hometown forum sometime.

The different ARs I have all serve different purposes.  Some are light-weight and are setup for CQB, some are heavy target rifles.  The lowers are all slightly different depending on their intended purpose.  I just like the variety.

What I consider my social 'go to' AR is actually 3 AR's configured identically.  When I found what setup/optics/accessories worked best for me I built up 2 more.  I use one for training/classes, 10k plus rounds through it, one as my main social weapon, fired occasionally, and the third is a backup that's in near new condition... Overkill?  Sure... but that's what this addiction will do to ya!

My varmint, target, and hunting AR's are all configured uniquely to their intended purpose... each job has the right tool...

They're pretty much addictive.
For me it's like, maybe I'll by a new pistol or Rifle.....then it's like but a complete lower is so much cheaper. Then next naturally comes the upper and that's basically how I justify my AR buying and I ain't done 'till I'm done.

Edited to add: Darkstar has the right idea.
I'm working on my third M4 which will all be configured alike for the same reasons.

I did recently sell a Bushy 20" I never fired, but am already beating myself in the head over.(Ironically partially to fund another M4)

OK, OK...calm down, dude. No need to get your blood pressure up.

Sorry for asking "such a stupid question". I just bought one and was curious why many of you guys here have many AR's.

EDIT: BTW, thanks for the welcome BookHound.

You don't know about the rule?

Whereas AR15 rifles are a social firearm and whereas it has been proven that an AR15 without companionship will become cranky and unreliable because of loneliness and whereas owning only one AR15 rifle will make said rifle uncomfortable and self conscious while hanging out in the gun safe, and whereas many different activities require differently configured AR15 rifles it is hereby decreed that all AR15 rifles should have suitable friends and companions to bond with when not in the field, failure to follow this rule will result in confiscation of all cool and thirst quenching, barley and hops based beverages in the violators possession. Talk about a hobby gotten out of hand. At last count, if you include two do-it-yourself CNC lowers I haven't put together yet, I have 14.
Oh, and a couple of AR-10s.

Yeah.... to anyone who doesn't believe, pretty much all of us find ways to justify buying more of them. I want a CAR style stock on my superlight, but then I'll have an extra stock, so I'll just have to buy another gun (cause you can't just have stocks laying around). And since I'm buying the stock I may as well just build the gun to suit it and leave the stubby on the other... cause you just can't get all the features you like on a mere 4 guns.... :)It truly is a sickening addiction....

Like Hawkeye said.  I have one for SHTF and "field" work.  Then I have one that is a trunk/patrol/CQB gun.

Plus, my girlfriend actually goes to the FDCC matches with me and uses one to compete with, since I don't like sharing.

Wow, you guys do have a number of ARs...  personally, I just buy and sell to try a little of everything...

At this time I have 1 pre-ban Colt, 1 post-ban Bushmaster, one AR-10 and 1 postban Bushmaster pistol...

Why, well the pre-ban just in case the ban doesn't die, the Post-Bans in case the ban does die.  If the government hadn't tried telling me I can't have something, I likely wouldn't have wanted it so bad in the first place!

Consensus is: the ADDICTION! I own two, one is an OLY SUM set up for varminting. The other is an OLY M4 set up for defense. My next project will be in another caliber, probably an Armalite in .243 Just don't tell my wife...

First you get a flat-top and put on a 4-16x scope you can shoot close & fast at 4x and long and slow at 16x.  But it doesn't have iron sights, so you get an A2 to shoot in the other class.  Then you hang a bipod on the flat-top for the bench and it's too heavy for the close & fast stuff (plus you decide 4x w/o BAC doesn't work that well up close) so you get a 16" upper half for up close.  Then you decide you want a 2-stage match trigger for the bench and a single-stage for the fast stuff so the 16" needs it's own lower.  Then you need a .22LR upper so you can practice cheap.  Then you get married and you can't afford any more...

Different styles. Preban, postban, flattop, one with stainless steel bullbarell for varmits and one with telescoping stock. Get the idea?
