Some AR15 rifles are chambered for the civilian .223 ammo. If I happen to get one of these guns, could I have a good local smith ream out the chamber to 5.56 NATO? I guess what I'm asking is is this possible, and is this commonly done.

Can someone provide a diagram of what the difference is between chambers: .223, 5.56 Wylde, 5.56 Match, and 5.56 NATO?

Thanks.

Yes it can be reamed to 5.56 NATO if the chamber is not already chrome plated.

I would try to buy a gun with a chromed 5.56 chamber to start with.

BTW all ammo that is labeled .223 Rem or 5.56 is the same dimensionally. The different designation really refers to chamber dimensions.

They are essentially the same round. However the .223 has more restrictive or tighter tolerances than the military 5.56NATO round. Basically .223 chambers are to tight headspace wise for the looser tolerances of the 5.56NATO so they tend to jam.

I thought the 5.56 chamber was slightly larger, to allow for thicker brass.
