just ordered a 16" upper for my old Colt lower---never had a boynet on it before, but somebody replied that a 14 or 20" work best with a bayo. just wondering if this is true, why that is if so and if I should even bother putting one on----anybody have any of the newer ones----how do you olike em?----Figure it makes a good backup in case of a jam for the house gun, plus I love edged weapons too.---Thanks for any info you can give me

The bayo mounts to 2 points: the lug on the sight tower and the flash suppressor.  On a 16" carbine the placement of the sight tower is such that it is a longer distance from the lug to the FS than the bayo is designed for.  Therefore when you lock the bayo to the lug the ring on the guard of the bayo is not fitted over the FS but around the barrel BEHIND the FS which of course is too skinny allowing the bayonet to flop around.

Hope this makes sense.

What curt said, plus:  If you really need to fix bayonet on a 16", you can get a bolt-on adapter from CMMG.  It might look goofy to have 2 bayo lugs (one on the front sight block & one clamped to the barrel), but you'd be ready to correctly poke VC 4" deeper.

If you get a 16" upper with the mid length handguards, the bayonet lug is in the same location as the standard 20" barrel.

Or you can get a modified bayonet, like this M7 from www.prebanarms
