Notice that AR15 carriers can be full-circle or half-circle/C-shaped/fully cut? The difference is that an M16's lower shoulder is as far forward as the upper shoulder, where an AR15's has been milled further back, or in the case of recent Colts, completely off.

The pics on the left show how Colt (and eventually everyone) milled a deeper, shallower ramp on AR15 carriers, to go along with notched hammers, to prevent run-away full-auto if you are dumb enough to remove your disconnector. I HATE this modification, BTW, and now only use carriers that fully enclose and protect the firing pin.
