Currently fascinated with these. Anyone have any experience with these? What role did they serve and who was issued these(Yes, I'm looking for a history lesson) I assume these are considered SBR, so it's a no-go for me but one can dream right?

They were used on full-auto lowers with collapsable stocks; essentially an AR version of the MP5. Barrel length is ideal for 9mm, and it would make a great platform for suppressing.
Of *course* you'd either need a full-auto, SBR, or pre-ban pistol lower to use this legally, unless you permanently attached a muzzle device that brought the barrel out to 16" (and why pay all the money for a rare 8" lower when you could get a much cheaper 10" version to do that?). -Troy |

They were issued to security teams in the Department of Energy, hence DOE upper. The security teams worked at nuclear facilities and traveled with nuclear material shipments, commonly in unmarked vehicles, thus needing a compact weapon that was easily concealable. Fun to shoot and more user friendly (easier and quicker to reload) than the mp5 family and more accurate than the uzis.

I especially like the use of the old school M16 upper in the 1st pic. Nice, simple fool proof A1 sights, & no forward assist (does the 9mm bolt even have FA notches?). No SBR in NY? [:(] Or is that just an aversion to the red tape & paperwork hassle? |

IIRC didn't these uppers have built in suppressors? (that's why they were so fat).

No, they were never intergrally suppressed. And they aren't fat; they just look that way because they are so short and because the front sight tower is much larger than normal.

Wave -
Like Troy said, the 633 uppers went primarily to the DOE, but I've heard rumours the DEA also bought some. I had one and really liked it, but decided to sell it to help finance one of my 1919's. The handguards (from the M231 port firing weapon) are somewhat brittle and prone to cracking. Unfortunately, they're also pretty hard to find. I liked it much better than the 10.25" 635 upper, but the price tag on the 633's is a bit too much IMHO. |

Ok Troy then I'm thinking of another Upper. Didn't the DOE, or was it the DEA, have an upper with integral sound supressor - the front sight was sticking up from the middle of the handguards?
I think that is the one I was thinking of. |

Wave, you need to drive up to the Manchester Firing Line in NH. I'm pretty sure it was a DOE 9mm verson of a Colt subgun I played with last year. Very nice shooter, controllable. Many other FA guns as well. WELL worth the trip!
