I wonder, in another thread one of the posts stated that 99.9 percent of the shooters on this site couldnt hit a 10inch target at 400-500 yrds......
With any sighting system

I do it on a regular basis bench rest with iron sights.......

How often do any of you get a chance to shoot past 100 or 200 yards on a regular basis?

We have a 300 yard range. Other than that, prairie dogs are the only long distance shooting I get to do.

Never....I doubt I could even see a 10 inch target at 400-500 yards...old age, ya know.

I'm afraid I fall into the same category as Javelin, with the naked eye that is.

Not as often as I'd like.  The only range longer than 100-yards to which I have access is on some private hunting property we lease.  Every time I go to the property outside a hunting season (that's the trick) I shoot 200-400 yards.  It amounts to about 5 or 6 times a year for an hour or so each visit.  We also focus on our hunting rifles, most of which are scoped bolt-action guns, during these visits.

The only time I got to shoot my AR past 100 yards was earlier this year at a CQB training class.  Since the class focused on close quarters work, we only shot a handful of rounds at steel targets from distances up to 300 yards.  My partner (ARH) and I could easily hit the steel at 200 yards (both of us were using non-magnified Aimpoints).  I had problems at 300 yards and only shot a few rounds.

I must confess. We have a nice range here I believe the farthest backstop is 450 yds.

I regularly shoot the gong that they have out there (I believe it's 18").

But I have to admit I'm too lazy to set up targets so I don't do any target shooting at that range (sometimes I don't like to hold up other people that are at the range too).

I set up some water filled milk jugs out there once and blasted them with my .308, but that's about it.

I routinely shoot milk jugs off a berm at 198 yards open sights with my Mauser 98 and cheap Turk ammo.

On the same farm, I took a ground hog at 325 yards with my Swedish Mauser this past weekend. A while later that day I almost missed one at 10 feet with the .22 mag a little later on. (stupid bastard charged me)

We take them with my Swede and a (Mauser) VZ-24 sniper from 198 - 450 yards with few misses.

The Mauser is scoped with a 4 X 12 X 40 scope, but is a well worn 1905 model.
It will out-shoot most modern factory rifles.

Edited because you do not have to use the shift key for numbers!

Too far to walk, to get your target!

Hehe [ROFL]

Just kidding. I can do it. We have a 800 yrd range.

I'm pretty lucky, we have a 1000yd range.  There are silloettes all the way from 200 to 1000yds.  They are much bigger than 10" though.  I can hit the ones out to 300 consistantly from a sitting position, no bench with my AR.  I can say that I can hit the "head" on my IDPA targets at 300, 3 out of 5 times with my AR, and that is smaller than 10".  With my 03A3, I can do the 500's pretty consistantly.  I haven't taken the time to learn the "ups" for my AR's sights past 300, so past that, I'm guessing.  Past 500, I suck.

Every shoot I do involves some 100+ yardage shooting.

every so often we'll get out to 300 yards, but I can't find the real estate to safely get much farther than that.

I only shoot a 400 yds. Its all I have. I shoot those 3' tall acetylene tanks. Some days are better than others. I can see a bowling pin @ 400. And I shot it also. and I have it on video, thank God, because no one beleives me. yeah, I know it was a lucker. You can see the pressure trail or whatever you call it. its cool.

furthest range in FL is 200 meters(might be a 300 yard one in central Fl) and its 2 hours away so I haven't made it there...yet(you have to get a membership to go) The only other range anywhere closer is 40 minutes away and has a 115 yard range.

So if I could, I would.

The club I belong to has a 400 yard range; actually you can go further than that, but you have to provide your own stand past 400. Out here where I live, I could shoot out to infinity. I could shoot 50 miles if I had something to shoot that far.
I can regularly hit pepper poppers at 400 yards with my 16" AR and an Aimpoint with no magnificaiton from the prone. I once spend an afternoon shooting my buddies FAL off a rest at water filled one gallon milk jugs at a measured 518 yards (with a scope). We hit them about a third of the time. I am sure we could have done better if we spent some time at it and were using good ammo and had a good solid zero. NRA Highpower competitors shoot from prone at 600 with iron sights using AR15s. I don't know how big the "X" ring is, but I can assure you that they can hit a 10" circle.

In Maine most everything is 300 yards or less.

So we hicks practice them close up shots.  Most of us however were brought up blastin' soda cans at 200 yards with 30-06 rounds when we turned 5.

I'd say most of my shooting though is 25-250.

At 500 yrds I can shoot up clay pigeons and then shoot the pieces and then shoot the smaller pieces [:O]. Oops did I say 500yrds, I mean't 50yrds. Here the farthest I can shoot an AR (legally) is 50yrds, the club has a 300yrd backstop, but because of [BS] STUPID provincial regulations I must use the pistol range.

Hokie,
That's the same way where I grew up in northern Michigan. When I was five I didn't even mind the 200 yard dash to set out a new "soda"can.

Every time I go out I do some shooting from at least 300 meters.  I have been shooting from 500 and 600 meters a few times a month.  I shoot at 10" steel plate and hit it most of the time from those ranges (If the wind is calm)  Anyone who says It can't be done just never spent much time trying.

I'm with Javelin on this one...I'd need the Hubble Telescope to see anything at 500 yards.

I've only gotten to shoot any of my rifles at more than 100 yards once...drove up to York, Pa for the Mason Dixon FAL shoot a couple of years ago...they had a 200 yard section of their range.

Around here, for me, it's strictly 100 yards.  I'm pretty sure that with a scope of some variety, or a red dot with a real good sight picture, I could hit what I was aiming at with a few practice shots.  I'd like to find out!
