Is there a difference in the size of the buffer tube on the CAR and M-4 stocks? Recently picked up a M-4 (stock only) and it will not fit the tube on my CAR stock.  Thanks

It's not a model difference, it's a manufacturer difference.  Colt uses a slightly smaller diameter tube than the aftermarket makers, so a Colt brand stock piece won't go on an aftermarket tube, and an aftermarket strock will be quite loose on a Colt tube.

shamayim is correct, i went through aa similar problem, i bought a colt sp1 stock  and tried to put it on a dpms buffer tube with no luck, colt indeed is a frak of nature and makes it so you have to use there tubes only

Does anyone one know where a guy could pick up a Colt M-4 buffer tube?  Also will the same buffer work in the Colts and the aftermarkets?

http://mstn.biz  Email them.  They should have Colt/milspec buffer tubes in stock.

What about the end plate and and extension nut? Will they work on both kind of tubes?  Again Thanks.

LashLaRue:

The Colt tube is a bit smaller than the more common aftermarket part -- Colt is not a freak here, the tube they use is the MILSPEC part.

The difference is due to manufacturing techniques -- one tube having cut threads and the other having rolled threads.

Yes, the castle nut and plate interchange... the threaded section is the same -- otherwise, there would have to be two different lower receivers.
