Could be I suppose. My Bushmaster 10 looks to be the same size as that one. Either way wtf is he doing out there with a 10 or 20 round clip...posing for the picture is what he's doing, because if he were killing people he'd have a 30 or 40 at least.

That's a magazine or mag.
Clips hold ammo to be stripped from, into a magazine. It is a 20 round mag. Your 10 round is probably a 20 round box with a block to prevent it from holding more than 10. In the old days that's all we GIs had (20 rounders). |

Hell you've got to be one bada$$ soldier to go out with a 20 rounder. With full auto selected that would last you all of 3 seconds. I'm surprised they didn't give you a drum.

Probably closer to 2 seconds if you just held the trigger back, as I recall. Takes longer to change a mag than it does to empty it.

I actually prefer 20's to 30's. I get fewer malfunctions with 20's, waste less ammo, and it's much easier for me to shoot from prone.

I heard that the main reason the military went from 20 to 30 round mags was that soldiers in the field during Vietnam were complaining the AK-47 carried 50% more ammo than their M16's. Anyone know if there is any truth to that, or is it just urban legend?

Yes, it's true. 30's gave the NVA an edge, they could shoot at you while you were reloading. Chuck had to reload less often, leaving our troops more vulnerable during close-in fighting.
On the other hand, 20's really are easier to handle when prone, and if you aren't prone in a firefight, you will be. |

I'd think a 120-Round C-Mag would be just as maneuverable prone, no?

Actually C mags are 100 rounds and they are nice when prone. The C mag makes alot of noise rattling around when carrying tho. My C mag is fun for showing off but I dont know if I'd carry it in a SHTF scenario. The 20's are far sturdier than the 30's, less noisy, easier to shoot prone, I have way more 30 rounders but buy up 20s whenever I find em cheap enough.

And the 20's, at least back in the '60s, had those nice metal followers that never got cockeyed and hung up on you. |

If I recall the M-16 had a higher cyclic rate than the AK-47 way back then (600 rpm vs 450 rpm). Even if they had 30 round mags, the 16 would still empty it faster. This was one of the reasons, as GSGT T Highway stated, the AK-47 "has a distinctive sound when fired at you".

Todays soldiers aren't trained to spray and pray. you are almost always on semi. a lot of guys like the 20's because of the reliability.

I used the 20 rounders to qualify with and when I was on my unit rifle shooting team... but for combat I used the 30 rounders.

Another point to think about is how much ammo your typical NVA/VC carried how many loaded AK mags if so equipped? Probably one in gun and 3-4 extras? Any vets want to share their knowledge/experience. Now how many of thoose 20rd M16 mags did our guys carry? Alot more then the enemy I'm sure.
20s are still around in the service but that will depend on the unit. Combat arms are rightly equiped with enough 30s. Support units will have more 20s and less 30s. I've got about 40 ea 30rds in my gear and wall locker to about 120 ea 20rd in my office. 10 ea 15 rd for my M9, and only one M14 mag (very short) but not shooting a M21 anymore. De Oppresso Liber |
