a local gunshop has one of the m-4gery olys with the stainless steel, blacked barrel, pinned "collapsible" stock, muzzle break for $720.  its new in box.  is this a good deal for this particular rifle?  upper is A2 style and comes with hardshell case and one PC mag.

Shit NO!  For a hundred or two more you can buy a decent AR!  don't do it!

That is usually about what they run. I have 2 Olys and have been very pleased with them. They are reliable, accurate, well made, and have a lifetime warranty.

I shot a pre-ban Olympic AR.  It was great, no malfunctions, good accuracy.  The kicker was that the guy who let me shoot it got it for 600 bucks, thats right 600 bucks for a practically mint condition pre-ban AR15.  Some people have all the luck.

I have 2 Oly's.  Purchased one for 750 and the other for 725.  Both brand new.  I am very pleased with both and have yet to have a malfunction (I don't plan on any either), plus I like the fact that Oly's have a lifetime warranty.

Ive got a Pre Ban Oly 11.5" and a Post Ban 20" Bushmaster, love em both, both shoot great. Just get what YOU like the best.. They are both great guns, and taken care of, will probably outlast you.. My 2 cents worth.. John

I have one factor built olympic and 3 rifles built on Oly lowers. The fit and finish is as nice as my firends BMs and I paid a good deal less. They all shoot very well (better than I can) and function flawlessly. Great guns

In the family are 3 Colts, 3 Oly's, 1 BM and 1 E.A. The Oly's will shoot with any of them.

machaira,

Some people hate Oly, most of them have no reason other than they heard a rumor from a friend.  I've had bad luck and complaints with Bushmaster, Colt and Oly, which are the three companies I use.  I've also had great luck with them, I dwell on the good, not the bad.  Nothing wrong with getting the Oly, it is a quality weapon with a lifetime warranty and a good price.

No company has 100% satisfaction from its cutomers.

Correct. If you look around you can find Bushys, RRA etc. at great prices.

They are probably fine rifles (except no CHROME). But I wouldnt buy a rifle called PCR ("Politically Correct Rifle"). Kinda goes against the whole fight the power thing.

I've had a '92 model oly in the commando configuration for five years and it's been great, I shoot it more than anything else I own.  I was wondering the same thing as machaira, have I been missing out on something by not owning colt, bm, etc...?

Olympic is about as good as the others these days.  I wouldn't hesitate to get another one.  $720 is a good price, not a steal or a great deal, justa average for an Oly.  The stainless steel barrel will be pretty accurate.  If the lack of a chrome bore doesn't turn you off, I would say get it.

It's not a PCR model though, it's a CAR-97 M4.

Most (but not all) of this crap about brands comes from our prejudices.  I always recommend ArmaLite but I was an ArmaLite collector for years and initially had excellent experience shooting the old AR-180 prebans and AR-18 machine guns.

I must admit to a prejudice against Bushmaster not because I think they make bad AR's but because of the 'inferred' Mil-Spec B/S which simply is not true.  (I know of no AR available to the civilian market by any manufacturer that is Mil-Spec and that includes ArmaLite.)

ArmaLite, like Olympic, has a lifetime warranty and that does give a certain security.

Like "gmtmaster" said....."Just get what YOU like best."

Hmm. The only thing I dont like about Armalites is that

A. Muzzle Brakes.
B. Price.
C. SAMMI chamber, not NATO.

HMMMMMMMMMM.  Then probably you shouldn't buy ArmaLite.  (Considering ArmaLite's back-order position, several other buyers think they're pretty good, accurate AR's.)

This years AR15.com SEBR is an ArmaLite AR-10.  I presently own three AR-10's and like them just fine and am ordering two more of the AR15.com AR-10's.  But, on the other hand, I don't claim to have great taste - just good guns.

The term PCR is Olympic's "tongue in cheek" sarcasm directed towards the government and the AWB. It has nothing to do with the quality of the rifle. My Oly SUM is marked PCR, it doesn't bother me, in fact, it has drawn a few chuckles.
The best part is that it will shoot with any AR out there. Geeeez, loosen up.

I kinda like to think that name was given tongue in cheek. An evil black sarcastic rifle.

I know its a joke. I do have a sense of humor after all. Id just rather not have a rifle thats a joke.

I might buy a lower for kicks someday though.

On Armalite. Im sure its a great gun. Hell anything that goes bang when you pull the trigger is a great gun. Its just that I wish they had some more options. To tell the truth though I wasnt thinking of AR-10s when I posted. Ive always though about mabey getting a AR-10B. Gotta love that brown furniture.
