I am thinking of converting a 16" H bar into a 16" LW and would like to see what some of you guys have.

Here is a pic of my preban Colt Sporter Lightweight.  It has since changed quite a bit.  For example, it now has a VLTOR buttstock, EOTech 511, and Vortex suppressor.  But this pic will give you a general idea of it.

Thanks Marine NP and Ridge, those are some great looking carbines. Keep 'em coming guys.

Ridge is that a hiperform tube? If so what do you think of it?

I have one on order right now. Gonna throw together a lightweight 20" upper, or as light as a 20" can get, that is.
Link Posted: 5/22/2003 12:04:16 PM EDT
[#5]
Yes, hiperform it is. It's the Ultra light model(less than 6 oz).  It is very light and strong and it handles heat very well also.

IMO,for a lightweight, it's the only way to go.

I love it.

This is my newly-built J&T Tactical LW kit (fluted bbl) with ACE stock upgrade.  Haven't weighed it yet...guessing 6.5 lbs (if you can consider that LW)

Tzyck, I'm just curious:  Why did you opt for the ARMS #39 instead of just a spacer for the #22M68?  Did you get the mount before the FIRSH?  Or maybe the 22M68 doesn't lock on the FIRSH properly; I think the rails on my FIRSH are a little undersized.

[#21]
Fizassist,
I had the ARMS#39 before I got the FIRSH. I tried mounting my aimpoint both ways you mention but felt I got a better lock w/ the #22M68 on the ARMS#39 gooseneck. The rails on the FIRSH are fluted down the middle, this may have something to do w/ it? With the use of the #39 I also get a better Co-Witt. view.

Has anyone had any problems with extreme heat in their LW barrels? I notice that if I shoot over 60 rnds. at a constant pace, my barrel starts smokin. Realy..., smokin. I have to put it aside and start blasting the AR10.

I use a Blackhawk hip mag pouch http://www.blackhawkindustries.com/product_detail.asp?product_id=2113&d=and only use the Magpuls for a gripping surface. I dont actually use them the way they were designed. I found the idea in the Magpul instruction manual. Also I find that they protect the mag better when doing tactical reloads. 50% empty mag on concrete + aulm mag= f**ked up mags. As for the "fugly magwell thingy" It makes a big difference it the speed of a tactical reload. I shoot alot of 3-gun matches and anything that can make you faster on a reload makes a difference.

Weighs somewhere around 5 pounds.
Bushy Stubby Stock & TangoDown Pistol Grip
Les Baer flattop w/o forward assist
14.5 pencil thin barrel w Vortex perm. attached
Modified A1 handguards
Diemaco C7A1 backup sight
EO Tech M512 HDS
Daniel's Defense Single Point Sling

It might be ugly, but I love it.:)

i call it a CAR-4 because i kept the features i liked from both the M-4 and the CAR-15.  CAR skinny barrel and telestock, M-4 flattop upper and handguards.

i wish i had a scale to tell you how much it weighs, but lets just say it is pleasant.

Light weight upper
Colt AR15 carrier
A1 upper
The new Cavarms lower abou to be released

I think thats the lightest you can get right now.

You caould get an upper with no brass deflector or forward assist too.  That is all you can do unless you get a lightweight freefloat forearm to replace the barrel nut.

yea DevL,

thats pretty much what i have decided.  i really truly wonder what the actual lightest forearm setup is.  is the Hiperform ultra light model actually lighter than normal CAR handguards?  i have some CAR handguards i took the heatshields out of and they are VERY light.  i dont see how the Hiperform guards could be any lighter unless they used an aluminum barrel nut.  i need a good set of scales though, because the D-ring and associated parts that come with normal handguards do add appreciable weight.

also, anyone have the exact weight of the new cav arms lower?  is it gonna be lighter than an aluminum lower + pistol grip + ARFX ultralight stock?

Here's my preban. I know a collapsible stock would be lighter, but I've never been a big fan of them. They just never felt like they shouldered well for me This rifle has a SP1 stock on it.

To get the lighest weight (still trying to get lighter....) this is a pretty good layout:

A1 upper w/ Bushmaster's lightweight barrel. If you can, SBR it and make it an 11.5". CavArms lightweight A1 stock lower. Ace lightweight stock. I am not sure about the lighest forearm yet, but the CavArms one is quite light. FIRSH might be interesting. Add a 20rd. mag, and there it is... oh yeah: SPR grips are a good idea.

I was at a gunshow and one of the guys had a FIRSH, I picked it up and the first thing I thought was "what a brick" that thing was heavy.

So is the FIRSH really pretty heavy or was I looking at some cheap knock off (It's the only one I've seen in real life)?

It seemed very well made, but heavy.
