I have noticed, while looking at various pictures of Colt AR15's, that the receivers of some have more of a grayish finish and some have more of a black finish.  Is this a photo effect or is there really a difference in finish?

Yes, you are right.  Some Colt lowers are grayer and some blacker.  For example, my preban Colt Sporter has the grayer finish.  I don't know the reasoning behind this.

And some other brands are Barney Purple.

It's also not completely impossible that you'll see uppers and lowers which look just slightly different...
