I just took my Bushmaster Varminter out for the first time yesterday.  I love it!!  It is the first AR that I have ever owned so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I can't wait to go out again.  I'm hooked.

VERY nice rifle - you wouldn't be disapointed in the least.  However, you may want to consider looking at the ArmaLite M15A4T 24" rifle as well.  They both have pretty much the same general specs - 2-stage trigger, free floating barrel, etc, but the ArmaLite has a fiber composit forend which won't get quite as hot and they have the picatinny front gas block just in case you ever wanted to use iron sights as well as a stainless match barrel with the tighter 1:8 twist for heavier bullets.

Either rifle, though, would be a great one for you unless you plan to use it as a GP rifle or CQB. [:)]

I've looked hard at the Bushy Varminter. But I'm holding out hoping to get a look at the RRA Varminter or a Fulton Arms Liberator II FARM5. For the reasons ArmyInf mentioned regarding the Armalite e.g. 1 in 8 twist and the ability to add a front sight. The RRA also has the Wylde chamber which is reputed to allow the use of 5.56 ammo. The Fulton has a 5.56 "natch" chamber which has a longer throut thus allowing
5.56 ammo. Dollar wise the RRA is the least expensive,Fulton and Bushy are about the same and the Armslite the most costly. Ive got a ten day Prairie Dog coming up fast so I need to make a choice fast. Any experaince out there with the Armalite or Fulton??

you can add a Vmatch flip up front sight on the Varminter...

and the 1:9 twist in a 24" barrel will stablize practically anything you put through it.  I shot 77 grain Federal Gold Matches with outstanding success at 200 yards...last weekend.

Good luck with your purchase, you can't lose either way!

GI Brat, high five on the BM's...

Another high five for being a GI Brat - I'm one too.

And I recognize that avatar of yours - The Phantom, after the F4 right?  USMC?

357sig,

FYI
The front flip-up sight can be ordered from Bushmaster's online catalog and reads as:
Bushmaster Modular Accessories System Front Flip Up Sight

I'm new to the AR world but have been collecting handguns for over 20yrs. Just picked up my varminter friday. Along with a Leupold 6-18x40mm and a Harris bi-pod. It's all together and sitting in my living room waiting to be shot. Loaned my camera so cant post pic's today. Hope it works as good as  all yours. Did I go too light on the scope? Is it gonna be powerful enough for 2-3hundred yard shots? Going to the 100yd range first. Will I be able to see the holes at this range with my scope. Or should I get a spotting scope before I go? Thanks

A Leupold 3.5X10 VariXIII Illuminated Mil Dot will get me to whatever range I want.

Your scope will be fine.

Bushmaster Varminter is scary accurate, especially at 100 yrds.  You have plenty of scope at 18 power.  Here's mine with a Leupold 4.5-14X50mm M1LR - it's fine past 300 yrds, although I always use a spotting scope regardless.

I got one a couple of months ago, and I am really liking it.  Shoots 55 grain Nosler BT's into some pretty small groups.  I got it for coyote and crow hunting.  I have a 3.8x12x44 AO Simmons AETEC on mine.

Here's a crappy pic of mine.  I love this rifle.  I'm thinking of getting the Armalite one piece scope mount.

88balanced, do you like yours?

I've never shot one personally, but I've heard they are supposed to be super-accurate rifles...the Bushy Varminter that is.

BM Varminter has tighter specs.  I bought one for long targets and P-dogs.  Guns as accurate as they come.  Here's a pic from the range:

100yrds: Pic
200yrds: about 1.5-2"
250yrds: about 3-4"
Heavier bullets are better farther out.
