Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - 5.56nato in a Colt Match Target

I am about to buy an AR but Ive got a question.
Can I shoot 5.56nato in the Colt Match target? It has 223 marked on the lower reciever but it has 5.56nato marked on the barrel.  If I cant shoot surplus ammo in the colt I guess I will go with a bushmaster shorty.

Hi. My Sporter Match has .223 on the lower as well and 5.56 NATO on the barrel. Shoot surplus to your hearts content. I do. The barrels chamber is 5.56 NATO, thus you can fire surplus and .223 Rem.
It is the other way around that causes problems, shooting 5.56 in a .223 chamber.

Virtually all Colts use the M16-spec "5.56" chamber, so there is no problem shooting military ammo in them.  The only exceptions are the *true* target models, such as the Colt Accurized Rifle.  The markings on the lower are almost meaningless.
