Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Blacking out serial number?

Why do most sellers black out the last couple of numbers of the serial number when they list their AR's on websites?  Is there any real danger in the number getting out?  Just curious.  I'm getting ready to sell one of my AR-15's and want to do the right thing.  Thanks.

Disreputable Person (DP) sees pic of AR on the net, and finds that poster lives in his general area.

PD: "Police department, can I help you?"

DP: "Yeah, my AR15 was stolen, and I found the person who has it!  Go get it back for me!  The serial number is 234908."


You don't see how this kind of thing could be a problem?
