Exactly what does following the proper break-in procedure do for the barrel?  

What happens if you just start firing a case of ammo in a new rifle?

1) Depends on barrel type and your personal views.  This article sums it up nicely: groups.msn.com/TheMarylandAR15ShootersSite/barrelbreakinpage1.msnw

Personally I just shoot the rifle I dont worry about breaking it in.

2) You'll get the rifle dirty and it will need to be cleaned; and someone will need to pick up all that brass ;)
