The powder used was still burning when the bullet left the barrel, IMO.

Actually the peak pressure in an AR is around 7-8" if I am not mistaken. The closer the end of the barrel is to that the higer the pressure of gas will be exiting the barrel. Higher pressure gas is louder.

Shorter bbl. higher pressure on exit= more boom, more unburned powder= more flash, easy as that.

Not true because a 20" bullpup is closer to your ear than a traditional 14.5" barrel and the 14.5" barrel will be louder even though its further from your ear.

Because the sound as measured at the barrel is louder in the short barreled gun. The amount it is reduced by holding it further away does not completely counter act the extra noise it is producing. Go shoot a 20" AUG and shoot a 14.5" barreled AR and the AR is louder even though th barrel is further away.

I'd say my 14.5" AR is louder for someone standing 5-10 feet to the side than it is for the actual shooter. Maybe it's the muzzle brake...

This phenomenon is called overbore. Which means the cartridge holds more powder than can be burned BEFORE the round leaves the barrel. My 44mag Ruger Super Redhawk with 8.5" barrel also is considered to be overbore with +P rounds. Try placing a sheet 5-6 feet in front of the muzzle, and shoot a few rounds. Look at the sheet, and if you see burn marks, it is an indication that unburned powder has left the barrel. BTW you should see the muzzle flash of my Ruger at dusk! 6' flame! Pretty awesome display all right!
