It can stand for the carbine version of the AR15. It can also stand for the Colt Automatic rifle. What Colt once envisioned as the M16/AR15 weapons system the included an infantry weapon, light machine gun, and submachinegun. Today, CAR is used by Colt to refer to the light machine gun version of the M16. There may be other interpretations also as to what CAR stands for, I just haven't heard them.

"CAR-15" has become a slang term for a class of AR15 type rifles typically having a lightweight 16" Brl and collaspable stock.

Its the CAR between CAR 14 and CAR 16. AKA, Automobile 15. I believe Dale was in CAR 3.

See what happens when you ask a simple question around here?
The CAR designation was originally meant to identify a 16" bbl, folding stock, carbine version of the AR. The general consensus is that it means Carbine AR, some think it means Compact AR. My wife says it means Cute AR. BTW, AR originaly stood for Armalite Rifle, but since Colt made them for the army the common usuage evolved into Automatic Rifle. Eg, Colt Automatic Rifle. So take your pick. |

The rifle in the upper left of the web page is, I believe, a Colt Government Carbine, model 6520. A lot of people accept the CAR-15 to be "Carbine" AR and I also believe the "HBAR" to be "Heavy Barrel" AR. A Colt 6520 is probably running somewhere between $1400 and $1800 depending on the condition, it is a totally pre-ban rifle.

The original "Black Rifle" was the AR-15.
The "AR" in AR-15 was simply the first two letters of the ARmalite name. There was the AR-15 the 5.56 rifle, an AR-17, 12 gauge shotgun, AR-7, .22 cal survival rifle, etc. Now to the CAR-15. The "C" stood for Colts' and the "AR" stood for ArmaLite - Colt's ARmalite 15 = CAR-15. The CAR-15 was the carbine version of the AR-15. |

When I was in Vietnam with the 1st Cav in 1970, some of the early XM-177E1's were being issued to the officers. At that time they were nicknamed the CAR-15. It had a 11.5" barrel with a semi-silencer (suppressor) that was kinda fat and about 5.5 " long to tame the loud report and major muzzle flash. The best explaination I got at that time for it's name was "C" for carbine and the "AR-15" was a carry-over from the original AR-15 designation that preceeded the 20" barrelled M16.
I don't believe that there was ever an official CAR-15 designation. Colt loosely used to call a 16" barreled, collapsing stock rifle the M16A2 CAR. I believe the Colt designation was Model 723. |

Looks sorta like this, but it (CAR/XM177E1 & E2) had a collapsable stock, I prefer the A2.

AR never stood for ArmaLite Rifle or Automatic Rifle, e.g. the AR7, a shotgun made by the original ArmaLite. AR simply stands for ArmaLite, period. |
