How do you get the free float type handguards off?  I have a DPMS super bull upper (traded with 73easting)and I was trying to figure out how to remove the handguard for cleaning under them.  It's the heavy stainless barrel and I've got no clue as to how or if it comes apart. Is this more trouble than it's worth or a basic cleaning task?

DPMS tubes are usually 2 piece. Unscrew the forward tube body, see the seam approx 1 1/2 inch forward of the receiver hsg? Usually pretty tight, tap it with a rubber mallet or warm it in an oven.

Tools needed:
Allen wrench for the gas block
Upper vise block
DMPS tube wrench
Craftsman band tool; to remove the hand guard tube.

First step is to remove the gas block by un-screwing the two bottom Allen head screw, and then pull the gas block straightforward.

Next step is to install the upper in the vise block and use the band tool to remove the tube.

If you want to pull the barrel, use the DPMS wrench to remove the barrel nut.

The most important thing to remember is making an index mark on the bottom of the gas block and barrel. This will help you reinstall the gas block and not get the ports out of alignment.

Got it off, thanks.   Just used the first reply a rubber mallet and a plastic block.  I was able to remove the guard without removing the gas block.  It reinstalled quite easily too.
