I have always used the Storm hardcases for my precision rifles.
Now that I got my 16" OBR, and it is seeming to shoot well enough to replace my 20" APA bolt gun, I am kind of wanting a small, discrete case for the disassembled OBR. I have seen a few pics of the LaRue covert case and am wanting to go that route. The pictures I have seen of the Covert always seem to have AR15's in them. Can anyone show some shots of a 16" OBR in a Covert, or recommend another LaRue (or other) discrete case? |
|
That is the one I am going to order. Looks perfect.
I am also thinking I would love that Surefire brake, but I dont think I want to drop two grand when I order my suppressor. That is the one thing that is holding me up on the SF brake. I have heard they do a good job, but I assume only SF cans will mount to it, right? Need to figure out another brake, I suppose. Anybody have any recommendations for the best brake for a 16" OBR 7.62? Just havent settled on a can yet. |
|
They are perfect! Got one in blue, very trick!
The SF brakes are Sweet, I run them on my OBR's (no cans)....U can do it! Best brake for 7.62...IMHO....The one shown in the pic or the SF K-Brake, but what do I know.... |
|
The SF is it the same one found here? http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=416. Just wondering? That setup looks very similar to what I have planned except I have an 18 inch on order? I am assuming that the 18 would not fit in a convert case?

If your are not going to run a can on your OBR, spend a little extra coin and get a Battle Comp BABC. I was running a Surefire break on my OBR (no can) I have a Battle Comp 1.5 on my BCM 14.5 Middy Upper and was so impressed with the performance of it I figured I would try one for the 7.62 platform and after 500 rounds thru it I am sold the BABC controlled muzzle rise and dampened recoil. I highly Recomend. Mark should really make these a factory option. Disclaimer I do not work for Battle Comp.. |
|
That's the thing though, I am going to run a can.
And I dont expect it will be a Surefire. The price is crazy, and I think there are better values. In the interim, I want an effective brake that will help me spot hits. But, I also am intrigued by brakes that allow can attachment. |
|
Can you point me to a link on this BABC?
I am not familiar with it. Is it something I can install correctly or are there indexing issues? |
|
I know the new BattleComp 2.0 mimics an A2 flash hider in dimensions, so that some suppressors that attach to A2's
(Gemtech HALO for one) can use the BattleComp as a mount. I'm not sure the BABC (30 cal version) is setup for this though. The BC's look sweet and I'd love to try one out, but I run suppressor mounts on all my rifles (AAC). -ZA |

It is QD, and the break is similar to an A2 w/o the can. Plus, the price is right on these. I paid for the can, an extra break (one is included) and the tax stamp for just under $1100. I don't have a 5.56 can ordered yet (a .45/10mm and .22 can come first for me), and these 7.62's are supposed to work pretty well on 5.56 as well. That is another plus, and money saving aspect. It is big and heavy for the 5.56, but at least I have something that will suffice until I get a 5.56 suppressor as well. ETA: Phantom 7.62 on 5.56 I found this before I ordered, and it happens to be the exact 5.56 upper I will run it on with the same suppressor I ended up ordering. |

I doubt that I'd buy a Surefire if they were on sale for 50% off. There are suppressors out there with much better decibel reduction. I'm putting a SRT Shadow that has been sitting in my safe since 2004 on mine. Full-power .308 ammunition meters in the 132-136 dB range, delivering 28-34 dB reduction levels, while sub-sonic ammunition will yield around 122 decibels. And I paid less than $600 for it new. As for discrete cases, I'm going to try like hell to stuff mine in a Pelican 1650. Then I'm going to put DeWalt stickers on both sides of it. |

big optics work in there too: http://i585.photobucket.com/albums/ss299/jus_ad_bellum/PB250686.jpg LOL, this is the case/pics that got me thinking I may switch to a soft, discrete case. Get sick of packing the big ass Storm case in my FJ. Would be nice to just sit this on the back seat. Which leads to the question. Is this case and the straps within it strong enough to keep all components from moving around and beating the shit out of each other? Yes, I know the weapon is a tool, but I dont unnecessarily bang the shit out of my ratchets either, and they didnt cost near this much. So, I like to take care of shit, call me crazy. |

Excellent, that is what I hoped. If I need something stronger, I can use a Storm case, but for back and forth to the range, this would be great. Going to be ordering one soon, hopefully they are in stock. |

If i'm flying, yeah, I'll use the storm case, but this is great for normal use and draws less attention in the car. |

JAB, I guess mine is setup differently enough that it is just too big. I have not tried taking the mono pod off, but it certainly does not look like it would help. I have (for now) a 4-16 Viper PST scope on there, and soon that will be changed for a slightly bigger 6-24, LOL. I am going to mess with it a bit more, but I am all but positive I am not going to be able to make it work, and even if I do figure some way to smash it all in, I dont think I would be comfortable carrying my OBR around like that. Kind of disappointing because I was really looking forward to being able to transport it around in such a small package. Case is made by Tactical Tailor and is a very high end case, but I dont need a $140 case for my AR's, I already have Ace cases for them. If I manage to get the OBR wedged in I will post pics. |

Quoted: It must be the pod and /or the location of the scope. The razor hd is a huge scope, so I don't know what else could be hanging it up. I also have a birdcage FH on mine that makes it a bit longer.
Messed with it some more and the only way I can make it fit is to detach the QD and move the scope forward one slot, as well as taking the (non QD) monopod off. And then it only barely squeezes in and would rub all up against itself constantly. Additionally the bag would be bulging and would offer very little protection. Overall, it is a very nice case, and if I needed a very nice discrete case for any of my AR's I would be all over it. Hell, I dont even need such a thing for my basic AR carbines and I am still tempted to use it, just because it is a bad ass case. I just wish they made one slightly bigger because it would be an awesome case for an awesome carbine. |

if you do i want it ^^ Well, its yours then. I will sell it for what I paid, new cost. I will ship. Or we can do some trading. Always my preference. On another note, I am not super familiar with all the Storm cases. I only buy the 3300 (?) for my precision bolt rifles. Can anyone say for sure what is the smallest Storm case that will fit the OBR, loaded up? |

Sorry! I didn't mean to lead astray!
When I used my obr mount with a smaller scope it worked fine, but I never used anything but the A2 suppressor. Ive seen others with large s&b scopes with their obrs in the case, so I didn't think much of it. |

Nothing misleading about that, LOL. (unless its a photoshop?) I am not worried about it, quality gear holds value, so I will only lose shipping, nothing but a thing brother. My setup just doesnt quite fit. |

Don’t have a STORM case but a PELICAN – they are made by the same manufacturer. I have this one:
http://www.casesbypelican.com/1700G.htm The dimensions are on the right. I think it will fit an 16” OBR with a collapse CTR stock (BTW, how long is that gun?) but probably not the 18” that I just ordered. Mine will have the SureFire comp which I think may make it longer, don't kown and kind of in the same boat as you. Good solid case. I got the egg carton style interior and it does not require cutting. My M&P-15 VTAC fits in it just fine. If it is too small just go up the numbers under Pelican/Large case on the left hand menu. |

If I can find a Storm or Pelican or Hardigg case that will hold a broken down OBR, even in two layers, that would be perfect. |
