Just to reply about the accuracy. I've called LT before and asked them the same question. They told me that accuracy is the same with all the different length uppers they offer. They said between a 16 and a 20 there is no difference accuracy wise, the only difference they could think of was a little loss of more velocity with the 20(i think thats how the answer went).
Fixed.
I think he was right. I believe you get maximum velocity at about 16-18 inches of barrel with 5.56.
You might think that, but you'd be thinking wrong.
Yep, you are right.
I had confused a test with a revolver for one with a .223 rifle.
The revolver test was in a G&A magazine 20 something years ago.
If I remember right, as they cut off an inch of the barrel, velocities increased to a point, then started decreasing.
Right now, I don't remember the caliber tested.
I searched the web and found a test where someone started chopping a 22" .223 barrel.
The highest velocities were with the original 22" barrel, suggesting higher velocities were probably possible with an even longer barrel.
There has got to be a point of diminishing returns, however.
