I recently bought an M-845 (Gen II SHP 1.55x red dot) scope from Victor at TNVC. Very good service and helpful pre-purchase communication over the phone. Excellent customer service all around. I'll try to get some pictures through the tube at some point in the future, but for now I will say that I am very happy with this scope. Even though it is only 1.55x magnification, I was able to shoot a 5 shot group (with my 5.56 AR) of ~2" at 100yds. Perfect for night time hog hunting. The dot size, as best I can estimate it is between 1-2 MOA. Sufficient for fairly accurate shot placement, while still being bright enough to have fast target acquisition.
It appears to be very solidly constructed, and as listed on the website, the windage and elevation adjustments were very positive and audible. The mounting system that came with the scope is a fairly nice dual lever quick detach type setup (although I'm not sure how good it would re-zero) that has adjustment screws to allow you to set the amount of clamping force. This is a very nice feature. The mount is also positioned on the scope such that when installed on my AR-15's upper receiver the eye relief is perfect. The eyepiece has an internal aperture that is only opened when you press your eye up to the scope...so when your face is away from the scope there is no green glow projected out of the eyepiece and onto your face...again, another very nice feature.
I don't have a lot of experience with high-end NV. My only comparison thus far is a Gen 1 ATN scope that I've been able to look through under similar conditions, and this Gen 2 SHP is a huge improvement. The only chance I've had to look through both the Gen1 and this Gen 2SHP scope at the same time/location was in my backyard. Looking in my backyard (at a distance of ~30yds), with the older Gen 1 scope I could see no details whatsoever in the shadows of my wood fence without an illuminator. With the M-845 I was clearly able to see objects in the fence shadows even with no illumination.
The scope (with the day cover over the lens) still passes enough of an image for me to be able to sight it in during the daylight out to past 100yds. I was pleased to be able to do this too, as in a pinch, I would be able to hunt with this scope during the daylight (the feeder next to my stand is around 100yds away).
Combined with the variable beam torch illuminator (also purchased from Victor), I was easily able to identify cattle out in the field on my hunting lease at an estimated range of 250-300yds..and if they'd have been farther away...I believe I would still have been able to see them. I observed this on a clear/moonless night far out in the countryside, and under these conditions without the illuminator I guestimate that I would have only been able to identify a human sized object at around 30-40yds. This is in VERY, VERY dark conditions mind you. I think if even a small amount of moonlight had been present I would have been able to see much better.
Overall, very happy with the M-845. Now I just need to convince some of my buddies to get one as well.
Thanks Victor!
