Is that platform pretty much the cheapest and reliable long range solution to get started?   I want to shoot consistently to a 1000 meters .... people call it 'navy seal in a box'    I have seen 1000 dollar rifles you can buy over the counter get well under an inch...  thanks

For somebody starting out with a factory rifle and factory ammo, 6.5 Creedmoor is a great choice.

Unless you consistently find yourself shooting in strong or variable wind conditions, I’d say 308 is just as good, maybe better, if 1000 meters is your main goal. Ammo is usually cheaper, more available, generally more reliable in a semi auto and won’t shoot out your barrel as fast. Adjusting elevation is adjusting elevation once you know what you’re doing it’s the same. Reading wind is reading wind, you’ll miss just as often with 6.5 if you can’t do it properly. 308 running at 2600 fps gets to 1000 just as well as 6.5 Creedmoor at 2800 fps unless you’ve got some crazy wind.

6.5 Creedmoor is a great cartridge, but I’ve taken plenty of new shooters out, who wanted to get into long range shooting, who failed to get consistent hits at 1000 yards with 6.5 because they didn’t take the time to learn what it takes to get to 1000 yards. I’ve had guys give up getting to 600 yards after shooting a couple hundred rounds of 6.5 Creedmoor, who thought they’d have no problem getting out to 1000 yards, because they had crappy ammo.

Remember, sub MOA at 100 yards doesn’t guaranty sub MOA at 1000 yards. If your S-D/E-S isn’t under control you might be 2 MOA at 1000, the ammunition is just as important at 1000 as the rifle. A 308 load with single digit S-D’s and an E-S in the teens will be more consistent at 1000 yards than 6.5 with mid 20 S-D’s and 75 fps E-S’s. Unless your just interested in hits and you’re shooting a 4 foot gong, then anything goes.

I am just trying to find a solution for an upper that is good for dinner plate hits at 500-600-700 (consistently even in some wind) meters  and maybe a full target at 1000... I like the idea that most people are finding great accuracy and consistancy in 6.5 off the shelf..  I have seen reports of 6.5 shooting literally .5 with those retail boxes of VLD or whatever they are... I cant setup a reload station currently..

Even the big 30cals can easily get pushed off a 12in target at 5-700 and several feet at 1k with a little wind.

My 6.5c LaRue UU does a fantastic job at 600. Only shot it at 1,000 once and I was very happy.

I've been shooting my 6.5 Creedmoor DPMS for almost ten years.  For what you want OP, it'll be a fine gun/cartridge combo.

This was my load workup target.  When I'm doing my part, the group on the low left is what the rifle can do with that load.

Yes, though technically reloads.  That's mostly what I shoot these days.

You have seen AR's under 1000.00 that can shoot "well under an inch," or were you speaking of bolt rifles?

If you're speaking of gas guns, I'm gonna have to question the veracity of that statement.  The only mass-produced large frame I can think of in 6.5CM that would meet that criteria would be from PSA and I don't think they're sub 1k.  A good AR barrel nowadays is running about 800.00, triggers are 250.00.

Anyhow, I hate to piss on the parade further, but unfortunately, the long range/precision rifle game is a lot of things.  Not one of those things is "cheap."  When it comes to factory ammo, if you can even find it, is going to be a minimum of 2.50/rd.  So a mag's worth of shooting will run you at least 50.00.  This situation will not be improving any time soon.

My DPMS in 6.5 Creedmoor was just a hair less than $1K, but that was ten years ago.  Not sure what a realistic number is today.

A good ar barrel will run you sub 400 and a good trigger will run you 100. Very capable ammo will run about 75 cents a round. Building a good top end is easy and they will flat shoot.   Gas guns are harder to shoot, but I have a couple that will shoot about .5 moa or less. +2 gas system is a must.

While with gongs it won't matter as much, but with bullseye, lots of 1000 yard ranges use digital targets now.  Those targets require well above supersonic impact velocity to track.  Sometimes .308 factory ammo can do that, sometimes not.  But pretty much anything 6.5 Creedmoor will be well over supersonic still at 1000 yards all day.
