Was rushed at the range today. Just wanted to get it on paper, didn’t have time to reach out any further. Am I to high at 25 yards? I figure this will be dead on at 200 yards. That sound right? I think the windage was right on, I think I was pulling them to the left just a tad.

129 grain Hornady American Whitetail ammo.

No.

Using Federal’s ballistic calculator and using their 130 be Berger load, a 50yd zero also owns a ~211yd zero.

Thank you. Guess I’m way to high than.

When sighting in at 25 I usually go about the same height over bore of your scope below the point of aim on the target.

So you’re saying I’m way, way, way, to high.

A brief look at 6.5 ballistics with a 130 grain bullet shows me that it is fairly close to a 270 Winchester with 130 grain bullets, albeit about 200 fps slower.

That being said, the old rule of thumb that has been around for at least 50+ years is:

"Sight your modern high speed centerfire cartridge rifles to be right at 2 inches high at 100 yards". In the vast majority of gun/cartridge combos this will give you a maximum point blank range pretty damn close to 300 yards. By this I mean the bullet will be within 3 inches above and below the line of sight out to that distance.

Now before everyone comes flying in here to argue, the above statement is a very big GENERALIZATION. But a little time with an old school Hornady load manual with the ballistics charts in the back will bear my statement out. Yes there will be cartridges and bullet weights where this does not hold, or the mpbr will be a lot farther out or closer in. But it is general rule that has saved me a lot of time in initial sighting in of rifles. And of course you will want to verify your actual point of impact at whatever distances you think you are likely to be shooting at, be it game or paper.

OP. I really don’t trust 25 yards.  I make the final adjustments at 100 or longer.

I hear ya. I don't know when I can get back to the range. But as you & 44-40pro suggest, I'll have to find the time to go back out & hit it at longer distances. The range was full yesterday & I couldn't wait any longer for a longer lane.

This was a rifle that had never been shot before & I put the scope on, on Wednesday.

It's a Remington 783, 16.5 inch barrel, w/ vortex crossfire II 3x9-40

You are going to be wayyyyy high at 200 yards.
4-5 inches high at 25 with a lot of estimating puts you at about 3 feet high at 200 yards and a zero somewhere around 7-800 yards.

Thank you. Yeah, I'm starting to get that.

I'm hoping to go out this weekend or next & fix that. There's no way you would get a shot that far here in the Forest.

Scope height (over bore axis) is an important factor. If you are going for a precise result you can't guess at the variables.

You can do it!!!  Choose the trajectory calculator and just answer the questions.  Sight height, velocity, etc.  Pick the bullet you're using off the list or pick one that looks similar.  Have it make the ballistic chart.  Then play with it by altering the inputs one at a time to see how it affects the trajectory.  It's a great opportunity to learn more about your cartridge and how range, velocity, and bullets affect the flight of the bullet.  You mastered ARFCOM you can do JBM!

Here you go...I guessed on 200 fps slower based on 2820 for a 24" barrel to 2600fps for your 16.5...Weather is my common fall weather before hunting starts...

Zero it for 100m and adjust from that point. A 200 yard zero is confusing.

And you're that high at 25? Ouch. You're trying to put a round in orbit, not aim at point of impact for 200. I mean, maybe with a 45, but that's 45acp, not 45-70.

OP, did you get your deer??

What I read in the first post, “I’m going deer hunting tomorrow and I only had 2 minutes to zero my rifle on the pistol line and make no adjustments. Am I good to go?”

I didn't draw anything this year. I am planning on picking up some landowners permits from some of the ranchers I know around here.

Those hunts are usually the second weekend of December, so I have a few weeks yet. I'll get it dialed in & report back here.

Using the data for 130gr FGMB he’s got a 870yard zero. Bullet obviously hasn’t stabilized at 25 yet that’s why the group is so big, Creedmoor is known for that, it’s why the seals still use 308 for their close range shots. It’ll stabilize linearly the farther it gets out so it’ll just print 1.5” groups from here to a mile, when the bullet goes subsonic and tumbles for better terminal performance with such a low velocity.

Velocity data for my 6.5creed with FGMB has a 870yard zero 4.6” high at 25yards...
