This is the Official “How Good Are You” thread of AR15.com

What is it? It’s a challenge to all to prove how good you really are with a rifle! Not sometimes but consistently.

Keep it simple 5 shot groups, 5 groups per target

1 MOA = 100 Yards = 1.047"
––––––––-50 Yards = 0.5235"
––––––––-25 Yards = 0.26175"

Top 25 for each division

Separate list of 1 MOA shooters and a separate list for .5 MOA shooters.

REMEMBER this, all 5 groups of 5 shots must AVERAGE 1 MOA to make the list and claim the title of being a 1 MOA shooter.

Doing one .99" group and four 1.5" groups does not equal a 1 MOA shooter, it means you got lucky once and you are a 1.398 MOA shooter (assuming a 100 yard target)

This is a challenge but don't be afraid to try it out and post, every possible rifle style has been listed with a category and a distance. It's all in good fun and to be honest about your abilities.

With that in mind here are the rules.

1. ONE sheet of paper, 8.5”x11” preferred and it MUST HAVE ALL 5 targets.

Meaning 1 sheet of paper with FIVE targets. NO INDIVIDUAL TARGETS. THEY WILL NOT COUNT.

2. On that 1 sheet of paper with 5 targets you shoot 5 groups of 5 shots each. (In one day)

3. Each group is measured OUTSIDE GREASE RING TO OUTSIDE GREASE RING with calipers (preferred) or tape rule in inches. Then subtract the diameter of one bullet IE if your shooting a .223 and your 5 shot group measures 1.13" you will subtract 0.224" to get a group of 0.906". If you are shooting a .22lr you will subtract 0.223", for a 308 you will subtract 0.308" (Remember- the more precise your measurement the better)

Some common measurements:
.172" - .17 HMR
.223" - .22 Short, Long, Long Rifle
.224" - .223 Remington, .22 WMR, .22 Hornet
.243" - .243 Winchester
.284" - 7mm-08 Remington, 7mm Mag
.308" - .308 Winchester, .30-06, .300 Mag
.311" - 7.62x39 Soviet, .303 British
.338" - .338 Mag

4. NO MECHANICAL REST/SLED, NO VICE OR SIMILAR DEVICE THAT SUPPORTS THE ENITRE RIFLE, NO SHOOTING JACKETS, NO STRAPPING THE GUN INTO ANYTHING, NO LARGE REAR SANDBAG ** OR REST. SHOOTER MUST HAVE POSITIVE CONTROL OF RIFLE.

THE POINT IS TO SEE HOW GOOD YOU SHOOT, NOT HOW WELL YOU CAN MOUNT IT IN A MACHINE.

5. OK TO USE sandbag, rest, ruck, bipod, rock with a hat, sling etc. on forearm of the rifle.

**Will be OK to use a small rear sandbag (ie: sand sock or squeeze bag) or bean bag  that must require constant hand pressure to maintain hold on target.

IE. Can NOT sandbag gun in place. Shooter must maintain positive control of rifle. No formed or V-shaped rests/bags

*** After much gnashing of the teeth we'll set the limit of size at the largest bag on the list which is 96 C.I.  Try to stay at or below this.

But remember that there must be constant hand pressure to maintain hold on target.

IE. Can NOT sandbag gun in place. Shooter must maintain positive control of rifle. No formed or V-shaped rests/bags. I'm sure someone will IM me or bitch about this but I can't make everyone happy. Have Fun!

6. Shooting position is up to you, sitting, standing, prone.

7. Posting:

1st picture of target set at the range you are shooting. If you are shooting more than one rifle at the same range using the same pic is okay.

2nd picture with 5 groups of 5 shots each, next to them write down group size.

3rd picture with calipers (or tape rule) left in place over BEST group.

4th picture of rifle and shooting setup (ie. Sandbag, prone and so on). Post all4 pics and also type in the post your 5 group sizes and what the average is. IE. .99”, 1.5”, 1.5”, 1.5”, 1.5” add them up, equals 6.99” and divide by five. So 6.99/5 = 1.398”

You can use the MOA formula, either way I will check the math and post the MOA on the result list.

Also type up specs of your rifle and ammo IE. Rem 700 with 168gr Federal SMK or Colt AR15 18" with Wolf 55gr FMJ or AK with 125gr Hand Loads PLEASE INCLUDE AMMO USED

Division you wish to be listed under with range, User_Name: Rifle Manufacturer and caliber - notable customizations- Scope- Ammo. Groups: 1"/2"/3"/4"/5" = avg. 3" = .287 MOA

If you do not post in this format or leave anything out your post will not be included.

8. In each division you can only have your name up once per gun. Meaning that if you shoot the Iron Sight 22lr with your 10/22 and average a 1.65” group and lets say place 4th. If you use that same gun and do worse, even if you would place better then someone else it will not count for your group. Best group counts.

Now if you then shoot Iron Sight 22lr with your M&P 15-22 and shoot better, say 1.25” average groups and place 2nd. Both that score and the 10/22 score will remain. Different guns will be allowed for different group rankings within a division. Best group counts.

This also goes for the 1 MOA list. Meaning only your best MOA will be ranked on the 1 MOA list BUT if you also shoot 1 MOA or less with a different rifle, that will also count and your name will be added to the list for each different rifle you shoot 1 MOA or less with.

9. Remember, this is NOT a Bullseye challenge, it's a Groups challenge.

10. Any and all ammo is fine I don't care if you use Factory loads or your super secret Hand Load that Moses gave you.

11. Ties in average will go to the shooter with the smallest group.

Service Division (AR/AK/FAL/M1A1 etc style weapons)
Iron sights at 50 yards

Non-Magnified Optic at 50 yards

SPR Division (AR/AK/FAL/M1A etc WITH magnified optics) **See rule 5
100 yards

Bolt Division with magnified optics (any precision gun) ** See rule 5

And for cheapness a 22lr Division

Any 22lr rifle with iron sights at 25 yards

Any 22lr rifle with non-magnified optic at 50 yards

Misc Small Bore Division
Any .17HMR/.17HM2/.17Fireball/.22WMR/.22 Hornet etc etc etc with any sighting system (Irons/nonmagnified/magnified) at 100 yards **See Rule 5

Unlimited Division
Catch-all class for anyone wishing to use a lead-sled, large sandbag set-up, or other assisting device prohibited from the other classes. 50yd minimum for non magnified optic rifles and 100 yd minimum for magnified optics of all calibers. Does not qualify you for MOA shooter list, but will be recognized as an MOA rifle owner. Further more if you have shot the same setup and are listed in a class you will not be eligible for unlimited. Let's not turn this into a full blown bench rest shoot.

How many MOA equal 2 inches at 200 yards?
(inches / yards) x 100 = MOA
(2 inches / 200 yards) x 100 = 1 MOA

I actually shot this for the sniper's hide challenge so I did 6 groups instead of 5. Not sure if it'll be accepted. Average of the 6 groups is .714" at 100 yards.

Would have liked a more suitable optic for shooting groups. The targets were the right size for the reticle, but the parallax was noticeable. Not a whole lot, but it was there. I'm considering a high mag optic for it.

Kelbly Panda action, right bolt left port.
.22-250 AI barrel (the 6m Rem AI does as well at longer ranges) with a tight neck.
Factory ammo will not chamber.
Stainless barrel, 1 inch at muzzle and 26 inches long.
Premier Reticles boosted scope that ends up about 40X (glass bumps internally at the lower end). There agreement with Leupold is apparently no more.
The Kelbly scope rings are made as one piece that is them cut.

Weighs over 12 pounds last I checked.

Have a BR guy build a live varmint rifle without weight limits and all sorts of good things happen.
I stopped 'competing' long ago.

Slightly different beast compared to most rifles used here. Mine is similar with a glued in Panda action barreled with a SS Hart .262 neck 6PPC. Last time I shot it for fun it printed 5 in 0.111" @100yds. The gas guns are where the fun is. Started in those about 12 years ago and they will test you. Hunting for a better load for my latest AR build and then maybe I will make a submission. Not sure my BR mechanical front rest and rear bag qualify though. Cheers.

Sorry...I think that you're referring to me, at least in part.  I remember the first day this challenge got brought up, but didn't really think much of it as I'm a reloader and post in the reloading and the 'old' precision rifle forums, often times using my target pictures to help answer this, or that question.  Most people in those forums here, or over on Snipers Hide, have seen my photos, so they have an idea that I'm not a terrible shot (or reloader.)

Yesterday, I sifted through the first set of requirements and missed all of the little add-ons and posted unsanctioned photos, which you politely pointed out weren't in the correct format, nor were they in accordance with the plethora of requirements set out in the OP.

I pulled them down and joked that I was 'taking my ball and going home.'  You obviously didn't get the humor and came back with a retort of your own.

I would have added more pictures, but I don't have them of the range I shoot at, I don't have them of my gun at the range, I didn't take pictures with my digital calipers when I measured things, so even though my target pictures illustrate a decent consistency and acceptable accuracy (<MOA) for a precision rifle type weapon, they evidently didn't pass muster for this place and had I read every word on the page, I might have saved myself the trouble of going into PhotoBucket and linking them.

While I might think that some of the requirements are superfluous, if not a bit anal, it's your playground and it's your rules and I totally understand that.

Just for the record, over on SnipersHide, members there are prohibited from posting anything less than 5 shot groups and if you shoot 100yds, you need 5 groups at least, although a single 10 shot group will suffice.  We might want to start policing all of the 3 shot FUDD groups, or singular cherry picked 5 shot groups, so we can be taken seriously.

This new 'Precision Rifles' section might want to mimic those requirements.

I wasn't talking about you specifically, as the 2 posters who replied after you were in question as well. And I am well aware of everything going on at SH as I post there too.

For the record, this challenge is 5 groups of 5 shots taken for each group. Supply pictures of the range, target with calculations, target with measurement device for verification, and finally a picture of the rifle as it was fired I order to verify the allowed equipment was used. No -0 shot groups, no cherry picking as you need to have it on one target, no 3 shot groups, etc. So I'm not sure where you're getting that.

I'm sure you are an excellent shot and reloader. However Akethan tries to keep all the entries identical in order to keep everything fair. That's all, nothing personal.

The reference to SH was just more of a general suggestion (requirement) for the entire Precision Rifles forum, as a whole.  People like to cherry pick their best groups and post them, or they like to snap a pic of their 'pre-deer season' sight-in targets with 3-4 shots.

It wasn't meant as a suggestion for this thread, since once I read every word in the OP, after taking down my photos, I got the gist of what's needed here.  I wouldn't be surprised if Akethan lifted the idea from SH, as Frank required a single page of 5 targets, if people wanted to post ANY target pictures a few years back.  He just didn't require photos of all of the other stuff.

It's nothing personal. You simply made a claim, as have many before you. You're more than welcome to back up that claim with proof as some have as well. Nobody here is spoiling anything. We're simply looking for proof of claims and shooting ability. Otherwise thousands of members could just jump into the post and it would go nowhere.

I'm surprised there are not more Noveske rifles or Noveske barreled rifles in this thread.  

There are more DPMS barreled rifles on the spr list than Noveske, WOA, or Rainier ultra match all of which are the most recommended in the "which barrel threads".

In the AR discussion there is more hot air and bullshit spewed to justify people's purchases, then there are statements based on facts. If you want a good barrel, the AR discussion forum is the last place to ask

Indeed.  I have a Noveske Afghan that I may shoot for the challenge in a couple months.  

I doubt the results will be all that impressive, and I guarantee it won't be 1/2 MOA all day like those fuckers say it is.  

The bullshit is thick on the Internets.  

And number 25 on the bolt division challenge has an error if anyone cares.

Jeff, I saw your post in the other thread. The bag I'm using is actually flat. It was approved earlier in the thread as well. It's an accuracy first bag from Larue. Found here.

That bag is 8"X5"X2" or 80 cubic inches.





A softball is 3.8" diameter = 4X3.14X3.61 (r2) = 45.34 cubic inches





The Larue bag is 44% larger.





Some folks are DQd for bags smaller than that. I understand that that bag didn't perform any miracle and probably wasn't even tall enough to compensate for the bipod height. But rules are rules.





 

There is a difference between a bag and a rest. The shooter must have to be in control of it to support the rifle.

There has been a bunch of controversy over the rear bag. I make the final decision on what is a bag and what is a rest.

Many shooters have been fine with that only a few whiners have bitched.

You stated these aren't your rules and that you're just following them. However now you're dictating what goes and what doesn't regardless of what the rules say. You're saying that the GAP bag is big enough to allow the rear to be rested down. That's fine as according to the rules, it's too big (52.5 cu in vs  28.7 cu in on the softball). But the accuracy first bag at 80 cu in is THREE TIMES larger than the softball set in the rules. If a rifle is capable of being fully supported by the GAP, it's sure as hell able to be by that bag.

This thread has lost all credibility.

PS. The Volume of a sphere is (4/3)pi(r^3), I think the poster above used the surface area formula by accident.

 

All the bags that have been kicked have been much larger and/or supported the rear of the rifle on their own.

Shoot or don't it's up to you.
