Been having a hard time working up a load. Lapua brass, federal primers, 142 SMK. Orginal powder was IMR 4350 then switched to H4350...
Rifle: 700 with Bartlien 1-8 chambered in .260 
. . No matter what I did my groups would not be tighter than this 
100yds 41.5gr IMR 4350 . . First work up load without testing OAL with H4350...started at 2.80 
100yds. 41.5gr . . Side note.... I don't reload... my friend reloads for me, as I like to smoke cigars and have a drink and that doesn't mix the two. |

Nice shooting. Some rifles like some powders more than others. H4350 is the better of the two anyways as it is very temp stable. If you find out you can;t find it though look at IMR4451 as well. Good temp stability.

Thanks from you I really take that as a compliment. Still room for improvement as I haven't started working on the OAL. I also worked loads up to 44.5 but the groups kept getting bigger so I went back to 41.5gr

Put that bullet 0.10 off the lands with H4350 and you will see them tighten right up. Match bullets like being real close to the lands. Another powder you can try is RL-17. My 6.5 creedmoor shoots 140 ELD-M with 42.0 gr of RL-17 with great results. Am currently doing load development with H4350 (hard to find). Got up to 42.8 gr and grouped fairly well with no pressure signs. Good luck.

Ive had good enough luck at 2.850 that I start and usually stop there. VLD, ELD-M, and Hybrids.

Bearcat24, log out and log back in... Have your friend measure distance to lands per bullet used. Each is different. Different methods can be used to measure. Once you find the distance for max OAL, back off 0.010 or whar ever you want to try. BUT, you can NOT put it tight. Since your friend reloads, he should know this. |

Yes I dropped off my rifle to him this morning. This is so sad.... I've been working on this load for two years because of work. Maybe I'll have this done by the end of the year!!!

I've never found anything for 6.5s that's as easy to find a good load for as H4350.

I am gonna go the other way and ask, did you ever try another bullet other than a 142SMK? I also have a .260 in 1-8tw, and of all the bullets I tested in it, the 142SMK gave me the most problems. My rifle loved any other 140gr bullet except the 142SMK. It liked Berger, Hornady, Lapua, Nosler and the 123SMK. I tried it slow, fast, long and short, with H4350 or H4831sc, best it would do was ~MOA. On a suggestion with another shooter, he said try Varget, right off the bat, the 142SMK shot little bugholes. So now, if I am going to shoot the 142SMK, only Varget for me with that bullet @2720fps. Just an alternate view. SY |

Just an alternate view. SY No, I think you pose a great question for me. This is my first .260 and was suggested the 142smk. I have been super busy as a charter captain and it's take 2 years to just get this far....  I'm sure there are other great rounds to try but I honestly have not gotten that far... I know crazy!!! The H4350 was a big jump in the right direction, now to work on the OAL. My test loads were 2.800 and I'm not sure how much further I can go with my magazines.

I'm on my first .260 as well and I explicitly wanted a powder other than H4350 because it was so hard to find at the time. I'm on a Bartlein M24 1:8. I settled on a 140 ELD-M after having decent luck with 139 Scenars. My powder is 7828SSC. 46.4 grains puts me right at 2800 with a 24" barrel. Shoots lights out. I may revisit H4350 or something different my next barrel but I'm not touching it. Roughly 1200 rds through it and its been an amazing rifle. I'm seating mine based on ogive but my OAL is 2.824. |

Why did Judas rat to Romans while Jesus slept? each rifle likes what it likes, I am sure there is a technical engineer answer that is beyond my ability to understand but at the end of the day, you can take a dozen different rifles off the line, and each rifles optimal load would be slightly different you found a powder that your rifle likes, buy another 8lbs and shoot till the barrels fails |

Just an alternate view. SY Varget is the shit! If you can find it. Seems that it is becoming a bit easier to locate lately. OP, there are multiple ways to determine OAL, but running a ladder test using different jump/jam lengths will get you there. Seat a bullet long and seat it in the gun (use light neck tension) and measure it. You should order the little Sinclair ogive "nut" to help you be more consistent for your records but you can OAL a bullet this way. |

i have a rifle in 260.
if you have the itch to try another powder... i've had good results from VV n140, N540. and strangely enough RL22. I just follow the Sierra Manual for starting loads... but start at about the half way up mark :) VERY nice rifle BTW |
