Anyone used a tripod for Precision Rifle? I've read about the RRS but can't drop that kinda money on a tripod right now. Any thoughts on the Predator Tactics Deadeye Tripod System? How would it compare to the Nightstalker or the Shadowtech Pig 0311? These are the three that I've narrowed my search down to at this point. I'll hang up and listen...

I am not a competitive shooter, but I do use a tripod for shooting once in a while..with that said, I have had great results with this newer carbon fiber tripod..it has zero issues holding my 16 pd long range hunting rifle... and the price is stupid cheap for what you get...130 bucks....out of stock now, but they will be back in stock soon..the same company makes a slightly lighter rated version as well...

Check out the tripod from Caldwell, precision target shooting rest.
It's only for bench or prone use and it's heavy. It's like a miniature 240 tripod.price is pretty good too.about 65 bucks. I just got one and I've not shot off it yet but it appears to be sturdy. |

Take a look at the Wrecking Ball from Vault Outdoors. It is fairly new, so not many reviews yet, but it looks like it might be the ticket. I ordered the package the other day, but have not gotten a shipping notice yet. Uses the same tripod as the Pig Saddle 0311 with a newly designed ballhead.
https://vaultoutdoors.com/products/wrecking-ball-package Setup your Wrecking Ball I am a photographer and have several tripods (Manfrotto 055 and a Gitzo carbon fiber, among others). These are not as sturdy as RRS tripods, but not nearly as expensive either. I have used them for shooting but they are not as stable as I would like. Mostly due to the ballheads. I feel like you need a very sturdy ballhead for good stability. Something like the RRS BH 55 or maybe the BH 40. Or a leveling base. Something like these. https://www.reallyrightstuff.com/tripod-series-3-3-sections https://www.reallyrightstuff.com/bh55-ball-head https://www.reallyrightstuff.com/ta-2u-lb_2 I have no experience with the Pig Saddle, but it looks sturdy as well. I did medium format photogaragy in a different life, I bought a Gitzo tele studdex which I still have, new they're too expensive but used they're affordable, people who buy them them take care of them. I had a 20# 4x5 camera which it held with no issues at all. Now I have a manfrotto 322 rc2 head on it.

Pig 0311 here. It's decent. I do not like the clamps for the leg extensions and would prefer the twist style. With my heavy pack on the hook and leaning into the gun, the front leg will start to collapse. I wish I would have

I have seen cheaper setups that people have reported to be functional but the capacity of the head (32 lbs) is worrying. My research is leading me to believe that the head is really important and the more weight it can support -the better and more stable it is. The very expensive heads can support almost 150 lbs. I know this is much heavier than your rifle. Just an uninformed opinion. |

I hated shooting off tripods, so I practiced it alot. It gets you above vegetation and terrain like a bipod can't (I guess you could get the Ckyepod high enough for that, but it would be awkward in a standing position), and swinging on multiple targets is faster. They are also very steady while seated, can be used as a rear support (I don't do this), and of course will also be used for binoculars, spotters, and rangefinders. PRS is all about precision fire at medium to long distances while using awkward positions on various barricades and obstacles. |

Yeah for a specific use match they can help but the majority of the time at most matches people use them for their spotter/binos more than shooting.

I recently took a positional shooting course and we shot off tripods a lot. For most of the class I was borrowing a RRS tripod with an Anvil-30 on it and man was it nice.
No way in hell I'm dropping $1500 on a tripod setup. Another shooter let me try out his RT-90C with a DLOW-55 on it. $500 I can swing so I'm going to buy that setup this week. For my skillset and experience that will do just fine. Was the RRS more solid, yes. Was it worth $1000 more to me? Nope. Edit: Innorel RT-90C & 2 Vets 55mm ball head, solid as a rock. Attached File |

Don't expect the head to really lock up with a heavy setup. If it is off balance, the rifle will sag/dip. I have a Manfrotto QD plate for the PIGsaddle, but they seem to be made of cast aluminum and very prone to breakage if dropped. I use the Manfrotto QD plates so I can also mount up the Vortex Spotting scope quickly. |

Ball heads should have never once been on the option block to stabilize a long heavy object on a tripod. We figured this shit out a long time ago. They’re called fluid heads. They’re for video cameras, and they better stabilize weight front to back, and cut out side to side cant. |
