As a novice shooter who has recently decided to take up yet another shooting discipline, how would one go about securing a sponsor to help offset the overall cost of participating in 3 Gun, IDPA, IPSC, etc?  I am by no means ready to go pro and do this full time, but I wouldn't mind having a little help and shamelessly promoting a company or product...unless it Tampax or some other feminine hygiene product.

Shoot a lot of big matches - finishing on top helps, but it's not necessary. It's also how you carry yourself. Dropping a dozen F bombs after tanking a stage will get you attention, but mostly the bad kind.  Most companies want as much positive promotion and marketing from their shooters as possible. Its more than slapping on a jersey and shooting a match. It means answering a dozen or more questions about product X while you are mentally prepairing for a stage.  It's more way work than it sounds.

I got noticed by winning a lot of local matches and doing well at the major matches I attended.  When a local gunshop wanted to put together a shooting team, my name came up.

Jess,
That is an awesome story, congrats to you on that!  Current work schedule greatly limits my ability to do much travelling, but meeting folks at the local matches has already been a great experience.  And yes, I was the guy wearing the long sleeve Smith and Wesson t shirt with the Springfield Armory hat at my last match shooting a borrowed Benelli shotgun.
