I'm no expert at all, but what kind of bullet is the Black Hills? If it's a SP or HP just maybe the penetrator tip M855 FMJ might be the best way to get through the cartilidge and bones. TX hogs can get big. (I won't tell you to choose a bigger gun... but I did!)

personally I use soft points or the heaviest round that shoot accurately. Shot placement is a must with any humane kill!

We had three hogs taken all at less than 20 yards with Hornady TAP 60 grain. All one shot kills.

i use BH 69 grn, most accurate in my 1/9 twist barrel... went hog hunting today, trying to get a bunch before deer season opens this weekend.... they eat all of our corn, all i shot was 3 squirrels... now those are fun to shoot at 175 yards... one can really hone their skills with that type of practice.
ETA: went out saturday, got one about 150 yards, 225 lbs, single shot right behind the ear, he ran about 1 body length and dropped without kicking or squeeling... don't you ever let anyone make you feel undergunned with an AR!!! |

Hit one in the mellon at about 35-40 yards with M855 on the run (lucky...). DRT big time.

Whatever your gun shoots best and you are confident with at your comfort distance. Mass is always good. Shot placement tosses a lot of variables in as well.
Me? 55gr Sierra GameKings in the ear is DRT everytime under 65 yards. |

IMHO I would always go with a SP or HP round for any game. Try to make the most severe wound channel possible.

I just got 2 more Sun Morn, 55 gr Hornady Sp,, 100 yrds,, 130 yrds, both one shot hits to the head,, DRT
Use the most accurate ammo you have,, if it will hold MOA,, go for the head, drops 'em every time. So far since Oct 1, I've gotten 12 hogs, all one shot, with my AR. 'Borg |

Hornady 60gr TAP behind the ear...dropped dead. (BTW, this little round did some SEVERE
 damage!!!) Shot placement...accruacte ammunition and shooter fundamentals works every time.
