Matt and I plan on shooting p-dogs next spring or summer with our barrels. We are considering bringing my .50 BMG State Arms rifle for a few of the longer shots. To help us narrow down where to look, what states specifically do not allow the .50 BMG to be used in p-dog hunting? I have looked through ND, SD, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, Texas, and Utah hunting laws, regarding small game and have found no mention of it either way. Many times the laws are written with a great deal of ambiguity.

Prairie dogs are not considerd small game. therfore there are no rules as to the li its on weapons used to Vape them.. If it were fair I mean really if it were fair. you wouldnt be able to use anything bigger than a 22lr. shooting a Prairie dog with a 243 or 220 swift is like shooting a deer with a 20 mm or 25 mm so there are really no limits on the weapon. We have taken them on occasion in Utah and Co. and Wy. but when you hit them you cant tell because the bullet strikes the mound behind them and sends a cloud of dust that blurres out any visual on it. besides it just doesnt give the flip factor...dont waste your money it wont give you the results yuo think it will.

The longest range that I have access to is 600 yards, without driving a long distance or having the hassle of going on a military base. My .50 BMG stays in the 10-ring. It will hold X-ring, but I cannot. We want to shoot p-dogs at 1000 yards and more. We are stuck with limited varmint shooting in Georgia, both in distance and in varmint numbers.

DUDE. A .50 Cal for P Dogs??? How big is the X ring.

Shooting a P dog at 1000 yards is for the super ultra technically enhanced varminter. Usually, it consists of a highly accurized custom bolt rig with a handloaded custom caliber and some REALLY good glass. IHMO. I am speaking by no experience mind you. But I used to read alot of Varmint Hunter magazines. I suppose anything is possible though.

If it weren't for the "destructive device" hoops you would have to jump through then we WOULD probably be talking about a state that allowed you to hunt deer with a 20mm instead. So now we have to rellegate ourselves to 50s and prarie dogs.

What is this world reducing itself to?

If I remember correctly, I believe that the X-ring at 600 yards is 6 inches; I could be completely wrong though.

Edited to add:
Shooting p-dogs with a .50 BMG is sort of like 'barking' squirrels.

A .50? John you and Matt are nuts. So you went from a MAC 10 to a .50?
I feel sadistic tendencies are being released and does the term "vaporised flesh" come to mind?

Every day man, every day.

We are never too far away from the .50. Even when we are talking about the MAC 10 we could easily switch gears to the .50

I was thinking of the Beowulf for the hunt too. The beauty of that one is there is less velocity behind this round. It might be less dramatic but worth a try none the less. One thing for sure is you couldn't get the same distance but it would be like hitting the critter with artillery shooting the distances I shoot with it.

300 yards is what I have her zeroed at.

And yes the Beowulf is Hard Blued.

Better to just place a few jugs of tannerite out next to a hole where you saw one pop down and wait for it to come up.

50 isn't going to make any more of a mess due to heavy construction on bullets and thin little targets.

For portability and for distances out to 1k yards, I wouldn't go above anything beyond 300WinMag and would actually be sticking to 308Winchester for lighter recoil(155grn Scenars likely being the ticket).

Take the 50 for the heck of it but it's the last gun in my collection I'd want to take, 5 foot long 40lb ALS and barely a handful of ammo, even from position shooting, is a pain in the ass. Not to mention muzzle blast is going to alert everything in the northern continenet to your presence even if shooting against the wind.

I considered the tannerite. I also considered that it was more of a pain in the ass than the .50 You have only a limited amont of time for the binary compound to work full force. I'd like to know that I got my money's worth.

As far as the noise, pain carrying,recoil, etc. If I cared about that I would not have gotten it in the first place. The cool thing about the 50 is that it's a .5" going in and .5" coming out of a thin target. I don't expect it to expand but the laws of physics tell me it could be fun to witness.

Yes, and the way you shoot I see why. By the time YOU hit the target, the p-dog would die of old age.

I want to be the first person to launch a Ca. ground squirrel into outter orbit and tannerite is the only way I think I could manage to reach escape velocity to get squirrelnic to complete his journey around the earth.

But being in Ca. I'm not sure I want to mess with tannerite.

My thoughts exactly. Tannerite will probably be bad in Cali considering that they don't like anything with more than 1/2 a round in the chamber of a gun.

Not to mention they probably are going to blame most of their fires there on careless handling of firearms or something pretty soon. "The bullet made a spark on a rock and started the blaze that burned 2,000,000 acres of national forest" I can see it now.
