Damn shame, probably a poacher on my land gut shot it.

They do often die on their own without human assistance.

Nice find.   My uncle went out hunting today (in the woods on his property behind his house) and found a freshly shot dead buck that had run in from somewhere else.

I don't think it was chronic wasting nor blue tongue as my property is bordered by a big river so no standing water to drink from. My buddy who was with me is a wildlife biologist for the state and estimated the deer to be only 4 years old. I suspect it's the son of a guy I let hunt there with me and his shitty bow skills.

What a shame.

The one pic where I can see his bottom jaw sure looks like that deer's pretty young.  Might be 5.5.  Can't see for sure.

Too bad the poacher(assuming that was the cause of death) was lucky and didn't get caught. My F-I-L's neighbor shot an 8-pointer during the antlerless hunt last year and got caught driving home by a DNR warden when the glass on his trucks camper opened while driving, exposing the rack. Said neighbor is banned from the property indefinitely, though I don't know what he was fined by the DNR.

Found 3 this year on public lands; one dead at least a year and all bones scattered, one with a little more meat than that one, and one gut shot I would guess a week before I found it, chewed on a little bit. 1 spike,  1 4 point and 1 8 point

I usually find at least one or two every year; I've never found one that nice though.

Doesn't appear the buck tried to find concealment.  Tells me the buck died rather quickly.

FYI - Make sure to call in and request an Incidental Kill tag for the head from DNR.

Years ago when I was coon hunting 3-5 nights a week I would find a lot of dead deer after deer season.  Most of them had some kind of arrow wound.  I found a couple that had apparently been killed by coyotes.

Damnit boy what a buck..

I found one with a rack that large  in a borrow pit once,, you could see it had a broken leg that apparently came from a strike with an automobile.. You find a 140 class rack in SC,, that is a rare thing...

I know I'll get blown up for being a dog hunter,, but..

That's one good thing about hunting deer with dogs.. The dogs have tracking collars,,, and they will go and stay with a downed deer... We recover way more deer that would have been lost now with the use of tracking collars and or gps on the dogs...

Yeah. That's a real shame. And one hell of a way to die....
