I am looking for recommendations for power supply.
AC to DC convertor, 12V, 5 amp output w/ cigarette lighter connection.
This would be for a GMRS application.
If I am in the wrong forum, my apology.

I have tried a Pyramid ps9kx.
It was an 'new, open box' ebay purchase.
The unit fried on the first use.

Did I just get a bad one?  Are pyramid units good to go?

Any other options?

I use this one and it has worked very well for me. It would be easy enough to add a lighter adapter. I have no idea on the power supply but I used to be heavy into car audio and pyramid was junk.

I think what you are looking for is a pretty easy ask.

Pyramid car audio is flea market junk at best.

For what your asking if the power supply doesn't make too much noise, it should have been ok.

No way to tell what (remotly) went wrong with yours.

I'd check for any blown fuses, breakers or reset buttons...

Maybe break out your DMM and see what if anything its doing...

Are you sure all you need is a max of 5amps at 12v???

If so it should not be hard to make that power.

The Pyramid unit is being returned.
The required output is correct for the radio I have.

The Pyramid unit was recommended in an article for use with the specific radio as well.

Now I started researching, the output shown may not be the output you get with the Pyramid unit I purchased.

Also, after researching, I may want a unit that could be used with other radios in the future that will likely have other requirements.

So any recommendations for a DC power supply is appreciated.
Very new to this type of product.

If you're not looking to spend a ton, I've had a couple Tekpower units (30 and 50 amp) that I had no complaints with and had the cigarette adapter you're looking for.

I just bought this Alinco DM-330MVT from DXEngineering.  Bought it Monday, it's on the UPS truck to be delivered as we speak.

Has the 12 vdc car socket.  Capacity is 30 cont./32 surge, so a little more power.  More power is good though.  If your requirements is really 5 amps, I would go with an 8 amp or 10 amp minimum power supply.  Good luck!

Are you using it as power source or just for testing?

Power source.

It's powering the Kenwood TM-271 right next to it.

Just my neighbor down the hill on 146.520.  Can't reach the 147.24 repeater.

Hmmm, you lacking in the antenna dept or possibly have the repeater setup a bit off???

Aside from the freq, you have the offset and possible tones...

Or maybe no one was monitoring when you keyed up, if its not a heavily trafficked machine...

Quoting myself from the ham radio station thread:

"Still as programmed since ~2003: +0.6MHz, 82.5, output = High.  Going through the menu checking things was a trip down memory lane.

Another ham who is about 3.3 miles SW of me can reach the same repeater with just 5 watts.  Keep in mind however, that I'm using a mag mount antenna sitting here in my office.  To get to the repeater - or the other ham - it has to go through most of my house, plus get past my all steel shop.

Phase 2 of my ham radio shack is getting an antenna outside the house and high as possible."

The 147.240 repeater is the infamous Harlie repeater in Huntsville AL.  It's one of the most trafficked repeaters in north AL.  I used it almost exclusively when I lived in AL.  While I was talking to the other ham on a cell phone, his son (also a ham) was reaching the Harlie repeater with just 5 watts.  I don't know their ham shack set up or their antenna situation though.

I've been using a RV/Marine Deep Cycle battery and a smart maintainer charger.  Runs one or more radios and give me the lights out backup capability.

Any downside to this ?

I've never used this setup myself.  But reading others experiences some battery chargers / maintainers can insert some noise on your output signal.  Usual method is to just disconnect / turn the maintainer off when you're using the radio to transmit.

Where do you order or purchase your units from?
I don't have a local brick & mortar store.
What online retailers do you use?

DXEngineering or Ham Radio Outlet are two of the bigger ones.

We have a DXE employee on this site.  I highly recommend them.  The CEO is a long time ham radio operator with an Amateur Extra ticket.  Most of their upper management have ham licenses as well.

If you are in Eastern Nebraska, check out Associated Radio in Overland Park, KS., if in Western Nebraska check out Ham Radio Outlet in Denver Colorado. These are probably closest to Nebraska; though, there may be a somewhat local shop that's not widely known.

The Samlex 23 amp model is a staple of amateur radio, under the Samlex brand as well as their OEM'd products for Yaesu and Kenwood. It would easily power your GMRS radio as well as other radios in the future should you expand your communications portfolio.

There are numerous other good options as well as some junk.

I had really good luck with ICT power supplies in land mobile applications, but they're a little more expensive than Samlex in the larger sizes common for amateur radio and harder to find.

Some of the smart chargers are RF noisy. If yours doesn't make noise where it bothers you, you are good to go.
