I’ve started to make my POTA’s 24 hour events. That’s another challenge. UTC midnight is at 4pm, so it cuts the day in half anyway. I don’t really get much 40m DX propagation until 9pm or later. 20m usually turns on around noon or 1pm. Only once have I been successful in banging out a whole POTA activation in that noon to 4 window. |

It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air, that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.

This weekend is the quarterly POTA support your parks event, so tons of parks and chasers are out and about. I ran 3 parks today and am catching a ferry to hopefully activate 3 or 4 more Lake Erie island references tomorrow as we'll.

I had QSO's with two POTA stations over the weekend that were both activating parks less than 20 miles from me.

I’m going to try to go to K-7201 at UTC0000 in an hour or so. I should be able to give it 3 hours. I’m going to try a vertical at the waters edge. 14.280-14-297. Park has only been activated twice.

Brought KX2 and my little endfed wire with me to South Carolina. Love having a kit that fits into a carry-on. Activated two parks this weekend. First QSO was to Hungary, that was my only DX. I generally work more EU portable from the Midwest Still good times and always amazed at what five watts will do. Did get a CW QSO with a buddy back in MN. Might activate some more this week depending on the weather.

Anyone aware of a way to spot yourself via sms?
I know the SOTA guys have a number of clever ways to spot themselves. I know the JS8 command works. Blacked out portions is where your callsign goes. Attached File Just replace all the necessary fields with the real information |
|
|
no cell signal.
....Just ask the guys you work to spot you. keep it simple |

And QRP calling for 45min trying to catch the first bite just sucks. SOTA has a sms gateway and can even spot via inreach devices. I wish the reverse beacon network could decode a simple POTA command and spot you. Most all Hf radios have a Cw memory keyer. Even if one didn’t know CW preload your memory slots with your parks spot data and send it. |

Tyrex if you try again I'll try. I'm down in Florida till Thursday. Maybe being this close to water will help. Still beed Alaska for POTA WAS.

The site will compare callsigns on the RBN to those with a scheduled activation and then spot you on the POTA spots page. It also checks the current spots and will respot you even if you change bands. |

Attached File ETA: The POTA site will also update active spots for a station if the RBN picks them up and their old spot hasn't fallen off the POTA page (takes 30 minutes without a re-spot). So say you spot yourself or have someone spot you working SSB and it gets your activation on the page. If you then change over to running CW on a different frequency or even different band and the RBN hears that, The POTA page will re-spot you based on the RBN spot as working CW on whatever frequency your now using. |

Hiking in now to K-7193. Park has only been activated once. I plan to be on 20m SSB for about 2 hours in about 2 hours. Likely won’t have service to self spot. 14.287 is the target freq if clear, but I try to find an opening between 14.283 and 14.297.
