This post contains the latest and greatest information. It will be edited to reflect any changes, if required.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update (11/29/22):
Propagation has been decent. We have been able to continue the nets on 40 meters only.
Due to winter propagation, we may have to do the net on 80 meters. Look for posts before the net starts to verify band and frequency selected for the net.

ARFCOM (American Radio Friendship Community net), weekly SSB Phone net. Each Tuesday, at 8:00 PM Eastern.

7.213 Mhz primary frequency, plus/minus QRM

7.285 Mhz secondary frequency, plus/minus QRM
. Most of the time we and up on this frequency, 7.285 Mhz.

Exact frequency will be posted (on the last page) before each net starts.
---------------------------------

----------------------------------
FYI. For 80m nets only (when 40m propagation is poor):
Due to the frequent 80m band congestion and multiple "rag chew" nets, it's not practical to use Arfcom frequencies on the 80m band. Net Control Station will find an open frequency and post it here.

We'll try to keep it near 3.861 Mhz, +/- QRM (usually +10, -10 Khz but not always)

We'll keep it within the "General Class" portion of the band.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everyone is encouraged to participate. Feel free to give us your situation report.
For the newbies: This net is held on shortwave amateur radio frequencies. You need a General, Advanced or Extra class, amateur radio license and all appropriate radio equipment to participate.
Want to become a ham? Read here first. Feel free to ask any questions or post your suggestions.

I'm interested.  For the next month, perhaps three, I am working at home (at the direction of the company for which I am working).  Thus, I could join a net at any time after 1300 UTC, and before 0200 UTC.  I suspect 40 meters could work, and I can do either 40 or 80.  Another possible band would be 20, depending upon the time.

Stay safe.

I'm open to any day of the week. 1300 UTC is when my day gets busy but I can usually find time. After 0100 UTC to 0300 UTC is best.

I just moved my main 7200 into my office so I can monitor throughout the day. Prob best chance on 40.

I am home for the duration. I will be available at whichever time and freq the rest of you want to give it a go. I don't have a tier one station, but it all works. East Central Illinois if that gives you a rough idea of my qth. ( just south of Champaign County).

I would be interested! I can't get on every week due to working rotating hours, but I would like to improve my HF phone skills and get more proficient on my radios.  Northwest Ohio here.  I like the idea of 40m first, then 80m if needed too.

last time we did this, the guys like gyprat and k9bob could be heard ( because they had amps )

the 100watts and mobile guys had a tuffer time on 40 & 80

then somebody, probably pic, tried to take over the 3898 guys, it was pitiful

arfcom was mowed down by kilowatts

I'm gonna be running barefoot, would love to have an amp someday but I don't play radio enough to justify the cost.  Maybe if I got one, I'd use it more... hmmm

Yep.  Only way to go on SSB.

But if we do it on 20m during the daytime, I'll give it a shot with my 100w.  40m on my random wire with 10w.....not even worth trying.

I'm down for it if we do it in the evening.

I don't have 80m but I can do 40m.

Id give it a try. 20, 40 or 80m works. Anytime after 4pm central, any day.

I can do after 2100 hrs EDT, except for Monday and Wednesday. Anywhere on 40 meters and up to 3.810 on 80. Prefer 40.

Running 100w only but eyeing amps this weekend. Could pick up an AL-80B f the seller is willing to meet me halfway ~200 miles

I will give it a shot with what I have.  I'm only rocking a 40M dipole and 100w at the moment, but I'll try my darndest.

I am good with this. Not sure if it would make sense to start on 20, then move down in freq.
Also working from home mostly, so days and time can be flexible.

Avoid Mondays during day before 4:00 eastern if possible please.

I would love to check in on a net with the guys around here. Probably 40 or 20 for me. If you get something worked out I'll certainly try to join in once in awhile.

Count me in. If I'm not at work when you hold it I'll join in if I hear you. I have talked to Gyprat on 40 meters before, so I know I can talk to him. The way my dipole is oriented it talks good North and South. The farthest west I've ever made contact was Texas. I'll sure give it a try.

I'll sit at 7250 during the weekday, just call cq arfcom and If I hear ya I'll answer. NW PA.

Is there a "bridge" between 14.250 and 7.250, since our net is on both frequencies at the same time?

1900 CT?  So, 0000 UTC.

I'll try 7.250 first, since that seems to be reasonable at that time of the evening.

7.250 will probably have AM broadcast at night

We don't have to use amps. Perhaps this net will motivate us to improve our current antennas.
40 meters will probably be our best choice. It seems like 80 meters has turned into another CB band by a bunch of entitled individuals who think they own 'their frequencies'.

What if we do a trial run this weekend? Say, Saturday evening?

Fine with me. I just need to be on another net at 10 pm ET.
Let's see if this time works for the rest of the crew. If not, propose a different time.

It's 23:22 UTC now and there is a very strong broadcast station coming in. I believe the language they are speaking is Spanish so I don't even know where it's from. My friend Jorge isn't here to translate.

Got on 7213 and talked to a station in La, didn't know anything about Arfcom.

Did anyone hear anyone?

I have 80 meter capability, and it works better than 40, but it's horrible right now. I think 11 meter was more civil back in the 80's. People seem to lay claim to "their" frequency and only they and the ones they approve can use it. I've heard some of the most vulgar things said over the air on 80. When I first got my Tech back in 94, they made you believe if you did things like that the FCC would revoke your ticket and take your gear. I guess nobody fears that anymore.
