OK, ARFCOM........give a few suggestion for a second HF rig for my shack.
I currently have a Kenwood TS-590 that I use for digital modes
I want a second rig set u just for voice so it could be an older , but not ancient rig.

I would prefer a Kenwood as I can use some of the acc I already have.
This would have to be a used rig as well.

Under 800 bucks !

Or if you want to get current get a TS-50. I am not sure how the new stuff will last since they went all solid state. I also am a big Drake fan.

TS-50 was an old rig 20 years ago.

I ran one in my 1993 Ford Ranger

It was a cool rig

I recommend the TS570, if you like the 590 it is an awesome second rig. Predecessor to the 590 and very similar to operate. I have. 590 but a 570 before and loved it. The also can be had very reasonable.

When you say "ancient", I'm assuming you mean boatanchor status.
Kenwood TS-520S, but it has a pair of 6146s in the final, is late '70s vintage, and doesn't cover the WARC bands.
It does have an internal PS, and the Pi-network final matches a wide range of inpedances.
There's a very clean operable one on eBay for $350.

How about a TS480

uses up a lot less desk space

great ergonomics

two versions

TS480SAT - 100watts internal antenna tuner

TS480HX - 200 watts, not tuner ( requires two 20 amp power supplies )

great rig, if you ever decide to go mobile

Drake TR7 w/ RV7 and filters along with other 7-line accessories of your choosing.

About as bulletproof of a radio as you'll find.

Unless you know electronics I'd stay away from the TS-940 and TS-850, even though they're good rigs. They just don't age well and components in the carrier generation circuitry of the '850 are now unobtanium.

There is a used TS-570D for sale on Z'ed for a good asking but would take less and it looks in good shape just FYI that gives you and idea of what they are going for.

570's are nice. I'm partial to the older blue on black of the 450/690/850/950, but wouldn't pass on a 570 or 480 at all.

Older hybrid rigs are good fun as well. TS 520/820/830

Or, if you want a newer backup that you will use, get a TS2000 and use it for V/U ssb and sat work. They're used around me for 800-1k

I have 2 TS-480 rigs
One is the HX,(200 Watt version) in my truck.
The 2nd is a backup for the home station, should either of them fail.

I can't find anything bad to say about them, othernthen I wish the screen could be set to green, instead of yellow.
I hate yellow.
