"It's only a hobby" comes to mind.

At least a 50k investment to chase DX.

He estimates he has spent 5 million on his station

Multiply that by about 10.

Imagine having that station

DX would be easy

you'd work something rare, and brag to
your friends

.....but they would think & say -" yeah but you got a super station "

it would take all the fun out of it

like the Twilight's zone episode "A Nice Place to Visit"

I didn't even have to look at the link to know who you were talking about

Clearly he ascribes to the notion that there is no such thing as overkill!

You gotta give it to the guy, he's got his priorities straight

You'd think a guy with a $5mil ham radio setup would live in some McMansion, but the house looks quite modest and on a dirt road in BFE, Florida.  I kinda wonder if he lives there, or if that is just his personal clubhouse.

To be completely honest, I'd trade the McMansion for that setup any day of the week.  He can even keep the babe and the Ferrari!

(disclaimer: I neither have nor have access to a McMansion )

Wow!  All I can say is Wow!

From the end of his qrz page, it looks like he may have been a professional photographer.  That may explain some of his spending money.  I used to work with a fella who did professional photography on the weekends.  He would make $8,000 for a couple of hours work taking and selling little league baseball pictures!

Heck, I had a tribander on a 35' tower, an 80/40 inverted vee, kilowatt amp and a TS-520 with an auxiliary VFO. Working DX and contesting were so easy they were becoming boring. I realized I had had more fun with my crystal controlled 5 Watt Novice transmitter and ARC 5 receiver. I was spending less and less time on the air and more and more time with my horse.

After I had divorced and remarried, I put up a W3DZZ 5-band trap dipole, added a manual antenna tuner after the TS-520 and found ham radio to be fun again. That was over 30 years ago, and it's been that way ever since.

Different strokes for different folks.

Now about that Ferrari and biplane...

I'll stick to my maybe 100 watt 991 and Buddipole.  I'll spend the rest of my money on......

ETA:  Spoke too soon.  I scrolled the rest of the way.  Shit!  Yes and my wife is nearly as hot.  No Ferrari's though.

I did scroll down.  And I have to wonder why he's spending so much time playing radio.

Nice setup. Looks like he really enjoys building antennas and loves this hobby.
One of my buddies has a similar, huge antenna farm near his QTH and he owns a contest station in one of the Caribbean islands.
He is very rich but he never lost passion for ham radio. One thing we both agree on is that money won't make you happy. Happiness comes from within.

All I see is a lot of scrap aluminum when he croaks and the wife sells the place.
